My understanding is if the rock came flying towards your car on the road it would fall under comprehensive.
Years ago while driving on the highway, a truck ahead of me ran over a piece of tire tread (at like 90 mph) ejecting it into my front bumper and cracked it in half. Insurance claim fell under comprehensive. |

I just went through this recently. Geico was charging more for M2 than my M850i which I daily drive. I started getting a new quote for all my cars and found that most was 30-40% cheaper than what I was paying now. My insurance had been creeping up the past several years and I just wasn't paying attention. Turns out that the insurance companies rates depend on the number of claims above or below $1000 not if it's your fault. I had 4 claims "under $1000" all of them were zero! 2 were windshield claims but the replacement was below my deductible, 1 was a tow for my son but he paid the tow truck directly (Geico roadside arranged the dispatch) and one was a question about if some road damage would be covered and they opened and closed the claim while on the phone with me. I did have an incident where I hit an animal 6 years ago and it was a $1200 claim. Overall these 5 claims ultimately raised my insurance by ~$3000 a year and I didn't catch on for a while. I have now switched companies and I am making an appeal with Lexus Nexus to get the 4 zero $ claims off of my record. The animal hit will fall off my record next June.

It is not a surprise the warranty would not cover the damage. The leak is not due to a manufacturing defect or an assembly problem. It is the result of a rock striking the radiator. I see later in the thread your dealer has offered you some good will. That's nice and I'm glad for you but I don't think for those who will experience something similar can count on receiving good will from their dealer. I didn't buy a $1600 rock but I bought about a $1600 tire carcass after running over one in my Boxster. (Out in the middle of nowhere Kansas at night.) The impact busted the lower hose connection. New radiator and some other things. Came to around $1600 and this was just a few years after I bought the car in 2002. I didn't file a claim. Since the tire carcass was stationary I don't think it would have be covered under comprehensive and I was on vacation and didn't want to wait to have an insurance adjuster come see the car. I was having to stay in a hotel -- the dealer provided me a zero cost loaner car. I just wanted the car fixed. FWIW I never had any rocks hit any of my Porsche radiators. But they were mounted at an angle and were not directly exposed to flying debris. The M2 radiators are a bit more exposed. The condenser is also exposed. Took a pic of M2's condenser (with less than 5K miles on the car). I hope it never takes a hit like your car's radiator but I fear it is only a matter of time... Oh, I don't tail gate but there has been some construction going on a major road I drive almost every day. Lots of stuff -- dirt/small (and some not so small) rocks on the road. I hold my breath every time I drive through that section of road with the dirt/rocks on it. |

Was this a damage by a rock flying into the radiator from the front or from the bottom of the car? It’s ridiculous that I have an M car but I’m too scared to drive it fast or closer than 1232m to any cars in front because of a stupid oversight from BMW… I personally believe the reason isn’t an oversight but a necessity for proper cooling… that’s why they’ve instead placed a flimsy plastic grille right on top of the coolers… my own little air flow experiment showed a lot of air flow restriction with the radiator grille store grille… waiting to see what Zunsport will come up with soon

I really need to get around to installing my grille and then do some pulls and get IAT readings to make sure it doesn’t restrict cooling…. I suspect the radiator grille store one is too restrictive based on my flow measurements as well as looking at the grille structure itself- it’s too thick and it just doesn’t make sense when most people upgrade their charge coolers and intercoolers to get slightly improved cooling and tiny more power gain and then slap on a grille that might be reducing cooling area by 30%.
I may not get to trying this before storing the car for the season but I hope someone can test it and prove me wrong so I can install it worry-free |

And I just found that Mishimoto makes auxiliary radiators with an optional stainless steel rock guard. This is very very tempting.

This will happen over and over. We had a few G80 roll in the shop with damaged cooling units already.
Mercedes had that problem with the AMG GT side grille and made protection mesh they retrofitted for free.

Had this happen to a GTI years back. Shit happens. Same with the windshield, some people go through 40 years without ever replacing one. Some like me are less lucky.

Go with Zunsport and be done with it or go with Mishimoto/CSF with their own steel mesh and kill two birds with one stone (no pun intended)… or both? Decisions decisions…

I confirmed today that the G87 uses the same auxiliary radiator as the G8X lineup. That includes the M4 CSL and 3.0 CSL. It's also the same part number for both sides.
That doesn't mean the Mishimoto auxiliary radiators will fit. They claim to be a higher capacity radiator, so if they are slightly bigger then maybe there could be a G87 fitment issue, but I bet they will fit. |

The two lower side auxillary coolers on my X3 M are very exposed too. BMW should've supplied a screen protector just like they did on the condenser unit for other S58 powered cars. These two smaller radiators are very susceptible to all kind of road debris.
