A second surgery is somewhat concerning though, it arks to the severity of the symptoms at this point. I'm still in disbelief that this is all happening.

Just my layman's understanding but in cases like this I believe it's mostly about relieving intra cranial stresses from swelling, while you wait for the brain to quiet down. Maybe some neuro docs can chime in if we have any here.

I've been on the edge of my seat since I heard of this last week. As others have said, " he's spent so many tense moments going faster than most mortals on the track" yet he's had his fair share of damage from motorbikes and now snow skiing.
I pray for his family and a full recovery! That would start everyone in the car worlds year off better. |

Good article here on exactly what happened, dispels a lot of the press hysteria.
1. Low speed 2. Happened on a small ungroomed rocky flat area between 2 easy groomed runs. Lot of speculation about how he was going fast "off piste" as if he was skiing extreme steep back country or something. Complete BS. Just a bad fall in a mellow area. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/for...-accident.html If you ski or board a lot it is obvious what happened here. Just a freak low speed accident in transition from easy groomed slopes to ungroomed snow with hidden rocks. Other news seems condition is stable or at least not worsening. Good luck Michael. |

I've skied the same place in Meribel in poor snow conditions, and it's all too easy to catch a ski on a rock, spinning you into a tumble. Just bloody bad luck that his head landed on a bigger rock

I was amazed when I saw pictures of the area how distorted the press coverage has been. And frankly how benign the terrain looked. Just bad luck all around.

I was skiing with a friend in Garmisch back in the 80s and we were coasting across the flats just before the base of the ski lift. Easy, flat field of groomed snow. My ski somehow caught an edge and I went down real hard, badly pulling muscles in my shoulder. My friend constantly reminds me of that tumble whenever we talk skiing. Shit happens when you least expect it. And when you're not expecting it, it's really hard to recover and/or brace for the fall.
I just hope Schumi doesn't end up in a disabled state. That would be brutal.

I agree, shit happens. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.
I crashed on my new Ducati, hit sand in a turn and highsided, got hurt pretty bad but lucky enough to survive. I went back to that turn, the sand was not visible, no way to avoid it, or take any precautions. I'm sure MS was an expert skier, it just sounds like a very unfortunate accident. Quote:

a) wasn't pushed by someone b) wasn't using defective equipment, as some reports say he was using rental skis. I know both of these sound completely ludicrous, but the authorities don't want to take any chances. I read somewhere today that there might be a press conference giving an update on his condition tomorrow. I'm no doctor, but I don't expect any change in his condition for at least two more weeks. They'll probably want to keep him in a medically induced coma for at least that long, maybe longer. |

I think the fact that some other people allegedly caught the incident on their cellphone is a factor in it. They want to make sure it wasnt a provoked incident to capture sellable footage

Hasn't it already been documented that he had stopped to help someone who had just fallen and was just starting off again when he hit a rock under the snow and fell onto another rock?

Hard to say what their motives were (the authorities) getting involved. But all you have to do is remember the sad and pathetic farce around Senna's death the Italian authorities acted out to get worried. Hopefully MS is OK and it does not come to that.
Having said that here we have a billionaire sports figure & world wide idol-legend German getting injured in France, and hysterical media frenzy building. I am sort of glad some (maybe) adults got involved from a legal standpoint just to keep a lid on frivolous and worse sorts of behavior from press and other unsavory types. I have to think the longer he remains stable in an induced coma the better his chances are, let's hope he comes out if it OK. He has literally the best care possible at this point in human history, and was in top condition. |
