Good job BMW engineers. Would have been fatal if it was something else.

Regular insurance doesn’t usually cover drag strip wrecks especially with a tuned car running slicks. It’s baffling why someone would hold the wheel with just one hand during high-speed drag runs when there are paddles for a reason. It’s seems like they were inexperienced and using the car in ways it’s wasn’t meant for.

The footage might reveal more about what happened; a blowout is a possibility especially if the slicks were cold. Learning from experiences like these is crucial in the car world.

Not knowing his build, I know that should be a key component that should have been addressed. Also having the correct aero is key too. We arent talking about 150 MPH. 170 in that is scary. That 20 MPH makes a big diff. And what about tire pressure? So many things could have contributed to the fail. Full M car...diff story.

That power he's pushing...its not all about the engine. Brakes, aero, susp, braces, etc. And high speed training. Both hands on the wheel. You can keep the wheel steadier if both hands are on it instead of one. The one hand at that speed....the littlest movement on the wheel and the car is out of control.

Hes lucky he walked outta that.
M drivers package raises speed limiter to 167 so designed to go that fast in right environment. I realize this was not an M car but still….

There's a visible change in the track surface when the car starts veering. Slicks + high speed + start of deceleration + change in track surface/friction + ...

Or, could it be a kind of snap over-steer (6:26 in the video)?

lol I see people on here criticizing his driving but have never driven a car that fast 😂.He’s done these speeds on the road without much if any prep. Look him up on YouTube or IG he has a TTRS that’s even faster. 100% agree with him needing a cage, I hope this is a wake up call for all of these fast BMW guys don’t have a cage!

We are limited to 155 mph.

If you f**k up and order your car with A/S Runflats, you are limited to 130 mph

Got damn thats a fast car. Glad the dude came out unscathed.

Looks like there was plenty of safety equipment. Airbags and such. Pretty cool set up, hopefully they can pull some parts for the next project.

In US, if something "hits you" that is comprehensive. If you "hit it" that is collision. Deer or animal is comprehensive.

Any "timed event" is not covered, period.

Typically no. You should buy track insurance, instead.

https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/tr...nsurance/faqs#

Doesn’t my auto insurance policy protect my car during an HPDE event?
Most standard auto insurance policies do not cover HPDE events. Auto insurers have started adding specific language excluding “track,” “high performance,” “HPDE-type,” “racing or speed contest events,” or while on a “racing surface.” Without HPDE insurance, you might not be covered in the event of an accident or damage to your car.

Took the car over a 1/4 mile to come to a complete stop after losing control, he was just along for the ride at that point. Extremely fortunate it did not flip.

People have tried that. You face jail time and fines for insurance fraud.

I believe it.

I would imagine that the car's ECU / DME would tell the entire story.

GPS coordinates, speed, time, etc.

And yes it’s stupid expensive to insure a track car. It’s why most people don’t bother. However this is the part where one would kick 🦵 themselves in the 🫏 ….
Hmmm..insurance fraud is a felony...with everyone having cell phones, don't count on the "incident" not being filmed and made public.

The fact that GPS and satellite tracking exist!

I absolutely am aware that these cars are equipped with GPS and they can pinpoint the exact location of the accident.

No way. Really?
Not so sure of a satellite photo but certainly EU cars record all sorts of data and make it available to BMW. They also have crash detection and SIM cards that handily call the emergency services to tell them that you are upside down in a hedge when you can’t.

All in, I would imagine the guy was into his M240i xDrive for about $60k to $70k ..... including all the work and modifications.

Just the car by itself probably has (had) a current market value of near $50k.

Quite a huge loss. But apparently, he has already acquired another G42.

I wonder if any of his mods were salvageable.

Nobody's talking about how this is the fault of xdrive. It's an unpredictable system when the road conditions change. Seen this before.

That car all in was probably upwards of $100k. And yes, he is now the owner of a TNM G42 M240 for round two...

At least this was the track vs the street. Glad he’s ok.

Maybe lost tire pressure? Tires will spin on the wheel and cause a loss of pressure or could break the bead. So after a couple of seconds the tire might have lost enough air pressure to cause the car to pull.

If you chalk the tire at the valve stem and launch the car hard enough, I almost guarantee the chalk line is going to not be at the valve stem on the rear tires.
