I'm 27 and would expect to have $100-$150k in liquid cash savings by the time I'm early-to-mid-30's. For you I would say to focus on a 3-6 month emergency fund first, then go for your savings goal target by age afterwards. Make sure your retirement is in on track too.

As for the to-be surgeon, you do realize being a surgeon is very prestegious, but really isn't the biggest bang for your buck unless you open a practice? And even then, you have to be extremely business saavy to make lots of money.

MOST students have to pay off the hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical school loans after they finish school. I hope your savings/trust account has >$200,000 minimum for that to happen, or you'll be in knee deep full of debt by the time you're done with residency.

My little bro said the exact same thing just a year or two ago, a mil by mid 30's-40's. Unfortunately now he's knee deep full of credit card debt and no longer thinks he'll be makin millions by then. Not saying that'll happen to to-be surgeon, but boy does life change quickly.

Liquid assets.

Cash
Gold
Checking
Savings account
Short term CD
some type of bonds
I am sure there's more but you get the idea
anyone would be a fool to invest in #1,3,4,5 unless they are already retired and there are many flavors of bonds from high yield to government (risk free); just something people may want to consider before the 18 y/o mutual fund jockey (called an investment advisor) takes them for a ride during the retail branch appointment

Made 20% last year, but this year's kinda slow. I make between 50-60K a year and live at home. Dangled in stocks but was too lazy to keep track of them; maybe lost 500 bucks (including expenses). Plan to open a mutual fund soon.

I would have more if I didn't spend money on cars... about 14K dropped on a 350Z and 4K on my current car. This doesn't include car payments obviously...
you cant open a mutual fund; you can buy units of a fund through an investment account

Why try to pick stocks? Do you have inside knowledge of the industry you tried to pick in? Do you have above average analytical ability? Let me guess, your turnover was so high that you blew any gains with your trading fees and taxes?

It was pretty damn easy to make money in equities over the last year or so. I play ETFs because I'm restricted from freely trading individual stocks (job thing). Made a ton of money with FAS and BGU. I'm out of FAS but I rode it from $30ish to $80. One mistake I made was buying Apple at $90 and selling it at $77. With the economy in the shitter last year, who knew that really really expensive computers (of which I've purchased 2) would perform so well! Patience is the key to investing.

I see your 52% and raise you 300% HAHAHA.. I bought a TON of C at like 95 or 96 cents.. that worked out well.

I like Preferred stocks, my Ford Preferred is up a ton PLUS the dividend is nice.. INZ is also another good preferred stock.

Add me to that list as well. I didn't lose my ass but I lost enough to make me bitter.
