How does he get around those that are currently residing in Germany with production numbers at status 111? U.S. citizens whom are receiving a U.S. spec G87 that will later return to the United States.

FYI, typically the SM knows more as to what is going on as the GM’s primary responsibility is handling the overall operation of the center.

I would take his word over the GM’s all day long. Every GM we have had was clueless as to what was going on within BMW.

Welp… As many know I originally suspected that the April 2023 launch was marketing, not vehicle.

The story about BMW hiring the additional 500 workers for April was from early December. I believe it also took into consideration of the Mexico plant producing the electric SUV (which that has been confirmed delayed).

Full article translated. Article dated January 8, 2023.

Great find BMWGirlFL

As soon as the new M2 begins to be marketed, the Potosi plant will open a second shift with 500 employees.
The BMW plant in San Luis Potosí ended 2022 with a workforce of 3,000 employees, and for this year, once the marketing phase of the M2 begins, this number will increase by 25 percent.

Since last December, BMW Group began production of the second generation of the BMW M2, which will be assembled exclusively at its plant located in the Logistik industrial park in Villa de Reyes, and will be marketed worldwide.

Made from its design by Mexicans, the BMW M2 becomes the third iconic BMW model produced in this complex, along with the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 2 Series Coupe.

In an interview with Exprés, the corporate communications manager of BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant, Elizabeth Arreguín, confirmed that they currently have a workforce of 3,000 employees, "with which we will close the year".

However, she also shared that this year there will be a significant increase in hiring, because "when the marketing phase for the M2 begins in April 2023, we plan to create 500 additional jobs to open a second shift."

2023 PLANS

Regarding BMW's plans in San Luis Potosí for the year ahead, Elizabeth Arreguín pointed out that the firm is focused on consolidating production of the three models that are currently assembled in this manufacturing complex.

"Our current objective is to concentrate on satisfying the production of the new BMW M2, of which we started production on December 8 and which will begin to be marketed in April 2023. This model will be produced exclusively in San Luis Potosí, so we must satisfy global demand."

On the other hand, she said that they have among their priorities to continue strengthening the supply chain in North America, "since the challenges we have faced globally highlight the importance of doing so," she emphasized.

And finally, the spokeswoman for BMW in San Luis Potosí indicated that they will continue working to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024, "through the adoption of clean energy sources, as well as new technologies," she concluded.

Yes, old news pertaining to adding 500 additional employees as well as beginning a second shift.

Nevertheless, many believed that April was the vehicle launch and as I have repeatedly stated BMW has been extremely vague about it. Therefore, I believed it was going to be the marketing launch. The vehicle launch will not be until June/July.

Edit, FYI with this latest information this proves there is no delay. Impossible for there to be a delay when the vehicle launch is not even in April.

Agree that April is looking less likely for any vehicle distribution to customers. If it is to be held to accurate, the first allocations need to be by the second week of February (with VINs soon to follow thereafter).

I was one of those 1M customers. Granted there was limited production (740 sold in the US IIRC), so that put an extra spin on it. What really makes the 1M feel so similar to the M2 are the limited color and interior options. Many hours were spent debating pros/cons of black, white, and orange.

Given the recent news about April being the marketing launch, I do not expect anything to materialize tomorrow.

So what exactly does it mean when it started production on 12/8/22? No one has received an allocation yet so what exactly is happening from the time it entered production to now?

I may have missed it but I don’t recall seeing anyone in any country reporting they’ve received an allocation yet (not that everyone in the world who is on a list to get one is a member of this forum).

In layman’s terms, I would think a vehicle starting production means the start of assembly but I know it’s not that straightforward. It would be nice to know what “starting production” on 12/8/22 really means.

Could be, who knows. Just weird it says it started production on 12/8/2022 and we haven’t heard a peep in a month and a half. Regardless, I would think someone might’ve gotten some spy photos in SLP of some G87s getting assembled or at least confirmation that they are getting assembled by now!
