To me this was a clean cut and proper decision. One of the first things taught to novice racers is "safe return to the track after an incident". In some cases there are circumstances that make it impossible to return to the track safely because the car has transitioned and become a missile. In those instances, there should be no penalty for the unsafe return. In other cases, like this and Japan with VER last year, there is a decision made by the driver to keep a rival behind them despite the fact that they are re-entering the track and have an obligation to do so safely and affecting other drivers as little as possible.
VET failed in this obligation. He kept his foot in it (listen to the car) AND opened his steering to drift the car rightwards AFTER he regained control of the car. This is an illegal move. Had HAM was forced off the track (the white line, not the curbing define the track limits) and had to brake to avoid the collision AFTER the Mercedes was halfway up the side of the Ferrari. Watch it from the different camera positions and it's plain to see. It was a deliberate move and the penalty, while harsh, was appropriate and with precedence. In an ideal world I would have rather seen them make VET give up the spot an give us 10 or 12 laps of the Ferrari chasing the Mercedes. That would have been a great outcome but the rules constrained the officials in that respect. Cheers-mk

Vettel was definitely aware of what he was doing as the post above explain.
Forget the penalty, Vettel still can't handle pressure! He's doing way too many mistakes and this time it cost him the race. He also lost the lead of the Canadian GP to Jenson Button in '11 or'12 I think after a mistake. |

At that speed, and with no run off area as he approached a narrow part of the rack, that excuse by the Stewards is ridiculous.
So in the future, any car that juts into an area of grass, has to let everyone else go by? I don’t think so. There is no advantage for an F1 car to drive on the grass. Hamilton couldn’t out qualify him, couldn’t pass him early, or even with Vettel exiting on the grass. The Stewards judgment was (and is) inconsistent. If they felt (which was a split decision) that there was an advantage, they should have ordered Vettel to let Hamilton pass and allow a competition. Handing Hamilton the victory was rediculous |

The first Canadian Grand Prix I attended had Mario Andretti and James Hunt racing for the lead.
They were lapping the field and Hunt's teammate accidentally punted Hunt off the track and out of the race. What ensued was Hunt running out on the track, shaking his fist at his teammate, having a track official drag him off the track, and having Hunt punch the racing official, only to pick him up off the ground and apologize seconds later. Hunt probably had a cigarette on his way back to the pits. There was some unknown new Canadian racer that started for Ferrari that day. I think his name was Newtown, or something like that. A Canadian owned car won the race that day, Driven by Jody Scheckter. podman |

I suggest you watch every camera angle possible. You can see VET open the steering wheel once the car was back on the track. Notice that I say back on the track and not back in control. VET actually turns the car in the grass...look at the path left by the wheels. This is an open-shut unsafe return situation...which is one of the first things taught when you go to racing school. I've read a lot of views of "the penalty". I like Alexander Wurz's view best.

Also we scream and mad about FIA dragged on the investigation after the race and change the outcome (re: Belgium 2008). Now we moan and mad about swift decision, and think FIA should wait till after the race and hear what the driver had to say. You cannot have the both!
