Got gripe #2. I don't like having holes on the back of the steering wheel where the paddles would be an automatic. Come on BMW.

I didn’t actually look at them, but yeah. They feel like screw holes. It would have been neat if they covered them. My fingers just naturally go there.

The knave!

Also are MT G87 owners having similar experiences with the 1st-2nd shift not being smooth? Has that been resolved?

Mine is completely smooth. My F87 had a 2nd gear nibble.

The 1-2 shift is the least smoothest of all my gear shifts.

As far as I know, none of the M weirdness of days past exist here. No crooked seat, shifting problems, crank hubs, or fuel starvation.

Hmm, ARE there any systemic problems on the current CLAR+S58 platform?

I have searched for S58s "thing" and have come up empty so far.

You're doing it wrong, everyone knows you launch manuals in 4th. #TH4GC

If the complaints are to be heard, weight is an issue. Though from what I'm reading, perceived weight and realized weight are two separate things. The car feels lighter than it is but still carries the usual penalties associated with bloat. That being said, I probably wouldn't notice the extra heft since I'm realistically driving 4/10ths at any given time and don't have any immediate plans to track.

Honestly, my prodding is because I'm looking forward to some more negative insights on the new car. There's a fairly good list of known F87 *ahem* "quirks" from useless recommended gear indicators to seals wearing down the paint on the door jambs. Many of which have been resolved in one way or another. I'm banking on the community to report these types of findings (and remedies) as the platform agrees for if/when I jump ship.

I don’t think it’s changed since the gear ratios are the same, and the CDV is still there. Without the CDV it’s better, but can’t confirm on the M2 since mine is stock.
Do occasionally fumble the 1st to 2nd gear change. I'd like to blame the short gearing -- by the seat of my pants this car's 1st gear is no shorter than any other car's 1st gear I have owned before -- but really the fault is mine. I get lazy and try to drive the car without paying the proper amount of attention to my driving, well, at least my shifting, and I don't ease the clutch out just right.

But other times when I pay closer attention the 1st to 2nd shift I can nail the shift and then it is free of any upset. Smooth as butter.

In my opinion this is a car that requires one's full attention at all times to avoid for instance that 1st to 2nd shift jerk.

If you aren't using your driver profile then you are really missing out. You shouldn't be asked for a pin every time you get into the car though. Just link your car key to your profile and it will automatically come up. Get your local genius to help you. You are missing out on features.

Not so crazy about the door handles. I've read up on why they did this (supposedly aerodynamics and/or a retro look), but I think they're a bit cheap looking and I miss being able to open from the top when I have stuff in my hand. A minor quibble, and will just take some getting used to.

That's interesting, I much prefer these over the ones on my F87. HAha just shows how different our individual gripes can be.

Even on the track, the G87 seems to be very competent and carries its weight well, just like the other G8x cars before it. The CLAR platform is a very good track performer.

It's early days yet, we won't know about body leaks* or whatever for a while. But a lot of the parts on the G87 are coming from other cars, so hopefully there won't be a lot of teething problems. Ya never know, though.

*bummer about the C8, really!

True, LOL, people get overly wrapped up in the ratios of the first two gears, when in reality they are somewhat predetermined. Most importantly, you have to be able to perform 0-60 in one shift. Anything else would be market suicide.

1st has to be geared to get you into the sweet spot of 2nd's powerband (and maintain some traction in the process). Second has to be geared to pass 60MPH before falling off the peak. There's not a of freedom there for engineers to experiment.
