EverdayDriver review should be coming out soon. They were just on Smoking Tire Podcast. They are doing a comparo with the G87, Camaro SS 1LE, and Supra (all manual).

They said the M2 is ugly, not better in person. "You have to pinch your nose or blindfold yourself until you get in". But once you're in its a nice driving car and interior is very very nice. They talk about how the camaro and m2 weigh the same now. Everyone at the table states the manual supra is the best BMW on sale today.

very impressive test results, especially considering it has ps4s, sunroof, and standard sofa seats. power to weight seems similar to the last CS, only a 0.6mph difference in trap speeds. the figure 8 was most impressive to me, 250+ lbs and less grippy tires than the CS and is still managed to edge it out.

Jason Cammisa published his G87 commentary on IG, similar conclusion to recent reviews. More capable and luxurious yet less fun.

Super disappointed with Cammisa’s take. He’s got his f87 tinfoil hat on.

The thing I don't quite understand is it seems like reviewers like this are completely ignoring the price discrepancy of the M2 vs the M4.

My M2 spec is $65k and is well equipped except for carbon roof/buckets. That's $12k below the starting price of the M4 and $15k below a similarly specced one. Cammisa raved about how much fun the M3/4 was around a track and very much enjoyed it. Getting essentially that experience in a car that's 15% cheaper is a clear win for value.

I get that it's not as "crazy" feeling as the previous gen M2 but it seems like reviewers like Cammisa are not evaluating it as a standalone car that takes what they liked in the m3/m4 and makes it more price accessible and a bit smaller.

You could get a cheap low powered car and enjoy throwing it around a track, but if you are looking at a car like this (or the last m2) you *also* want a nice car that you can enjoy driving casually around town.

"New M2 accelerates the maturing: WAY more buttoned-down. Likely faster on road and track. Unflappable chassis. Puts power down commendably. But no longer stupid-fun in normal driving."

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I'll keep my 335i for stupid-fun.

On the plus side, the new star-spec 4S tires are almost as fast as the previous gen Cups, and there is quite a bit more tire under the car.

I was totally expecting these neck-and-neck results. BMW carefully crafts the packages so the new ones nibble at the heels of the previous top offerings. How else could they sell them?

What I like most about the new car is that with the carbon package, it is a useful $10k less than the F87 CS.

Cammisa's take is fair and about as expected. He's not the first to bring up the new M2, while faster, being a more numb and isolated experience. SG, TH, topher/milesperhr, etc had mentioned this. He doesn't care about lap times and prefers lighter more engaging cars. I think he still daily drives a golf ?

He did like the G80 M3 which is odd. But i think it was because he felt like it was a 'great M5'. And now he feels the M2 is too much like that car, instead of like a 1M or E46.

So, when Cammisa says he can't imagine buying an M2 instead of a BRZ AND a GR86, I understand what he's saying, but that logic doesn't work for me.

Me: "Great, now I have TWO cars and neither is a daily driver. Not helpful."

I frankly don't disagree with much that he is saying, but he is ONLY reviewing the car as if it's his toy car, not his daily or only.

This car WILL be my daily, and I need a car my wife isn't scared to drive. So all of his negatives are actually pluses, to me.

Hopefully, there will be a G87 CS that is better aligned with what Jason wants.

Another thing I observe in these reviews. I think the reviewers really don't have a problem with the G87, per se. Their real problem is that the 1M no longer exists.

If the 1M still existed, I think the reviewers would be able to better evaluate the G87 on its actual merits. They'd view it as a cheaper, baby M4, and I think they'd view it more favorably.

Alas, every reviewer has a 1M sized hole in their heart, and keeps trying to jam the M2 into that spot.

It's like the father who only has daughters but wants a son, and ends up mistreating those daughters.

Thanks for posting the C/D numbers! The "laggy" 6MT and overall "heavy" G87 managed the following performance against the 4BW (closest competitor universally praised for its 6MT, twin turbo V6, chassis, and overall driving experience):

5-60: 4.6 vs 5.3
30-50 6th gear: 7.3 vs 9.6
50-70 6th gear: 6.2 vs 7.1
Skidpad: 1.03g vs 1.01g
Qtr mile: 12.2 at 118mph vs 12.6 at 114mph
100-0: 302ft vs 310ft

Cliffs:

"... overall i'm a bit underwhelmed by the handling, steering feedback, and weight of this car. But i'm impressed with how comfortable and how good of a daily driver it is. If you're looking for a full fledged sports car that makes you feel alive everytime you get in, this isn't it. But if you want a good daily driver that can also rip on the weekends and kill supercars (with mods) then its great."

Grassroots Motorsports came out with their review and it's a positive outlook. The M2 seems to nail the Daily Driver/Weekend track toy balance. As someone who is local to this track, I will say HP usually wins at the FIRM and the new M2 on stock tires time of 1:16.69 beat my PB of 1:16.8 in my E36 M3 track car. For comparison, an RWD G80 M3 Comp ran a 1:16.9 around the same track in stock guise on a very spirited instructor run.

Is the BMW M2 actually faster than it looks?
