The problem is, most the major employers and the places with jobs that are highly desirable, keep upping the requirements. Add to the fact that everyone is getting a degree now, and you have to either go to a prestigious school or get an advanced degree (masters/phd) or both to be considered for jobs that in the past didnt require it. This is something I dont see ending anytime soon, especially if some of these people get their way and college becomes a right vs a privilege. |

There is no doubt that a "free degree" is about the worst idea to come down the pike in a long time. HS grads will know even less than they do currently as that learning will now be college based. This is mandatory if you plan on letting every student in. Even the dumb ass will get in. So that makes under grad equal to current HS grad. Now post grad is a basic degree and PhD becomes 1st level post grad. That puts the PhD grad at 8-10 years of school and all of it financed. It just won't work. $30-50k/ semester for 10 years at 12-19%. There will be some people getting rich off this scheme.

Best case scenario is wait for it to level out, which it will, eventually. Sooner or later most people wont be able to afford tuition, enrollment rates will drop, and prices will start to come down. Hopefully this happens before my kids get to college, or they better be good at dancing. |

Back home in OZ, I paid (in today's money) about $4K a year, the money was lent to me by the government who then garnished my wages at an increasing percentage as my income grew. I was raised by my mother as she struggled through a monumental depression and a poor skill set, she struggled financially despite busting a gut (literally with 4 hernias) to make ends meet. In your world i fall through the cracks, I don't get my marketing degree and I am not professionally employed. Whilst i too feel "free" is a mistake, the cost of an education in the USA is nothing short of outrageous. |

The sad part is, the kids that come out of college with degrees into this plant have no concept of manufacturing as a whole. Poor problem solving skills, can't read basic measuring equipment or run CNC's to make their own components. They have book knowledge, but my work experience makes me question a lot of the decisions that are made here. |

with zillow and realtor.com, don't ask a person how much his home is worth, ask them for their address. Anyhow I do remember my classmates esp. from Long Island routinely living at home until late 20's. Today, I know someone who lives at home at 39. Parents really need to show their kids their size 12's at age 18. It's ok to live at home while in college, and on break, but upon graduation, throw them out by the seat of their pants. They will thank you later on. I know all this from experience, seeing that my son is 2 1/2.... |

My coworker's son just graduated from an Ivy League school and he said they only paid room and board (I estimate that he and his wife are < $100k). The reality, however, is my former friend's son went to an elite prep school costing her $40k/yr. as a single mom? Her own parents told her not to put all her eggs in one basket. Her son was top 1% in the SATs ACT blah blah blah, and did not even get into Boston College. In our day, BC was a safety school, I mean it even today accepts 30% and has a low yield. But guess what mama? You had better have straight A's. edit: forgot about the eggs in one basket thing, kid is ungrateful, has threatened to commit suicide, run a way, partying hardily now, etc., and going to a school whose tuition is ~ $70k, and my former friend has to pay $28k of it cash. She financed a Honda CR-V for 60 mos. with little down. 60 mos. Imagine coming up with $28k/yr. cash? For an ungrateful son? And this son was a model kid when he was 4-13.....they change. That's the problem imho, the "good" schools are relatively small, and the pool that is applying is worldwide. So now, they choose among the perfect. My kid's only 2 1/2, and seriously, I'm already worried. |

Regarding asking for address - that's a bit personal, haha. Funny thing is that on car forums, people tend to exaggerate and puff out their chests all the time. |

The people that cry that college tuition rates hurt the poor and it perpetuates poverty, dont understand that with just a little work, they can get a full ride or severly discounted tuition rate based on their little income. But hey, its easier to just blame the system for keeping you uneducated and poor. |

In Maryland if you go to state and get accepted into engineering college it's free. Irrespective of income. At least it was in '07 and I doubt things have changed.
