Top gear would take the pi55 and then start their review.
I think that’s the difference here.

You didn't watch all the reviews then.

1. 2nd Gear, 20 mph, the car shoots out like a rocket as it is in boost.
2. 4th Gear, 30 mph, the car is around 2k rpm, torque builds quickly & you're able to ride it all the way up through the gear. I counted about 5 seconds from 30 to 50 mph. It doesn't bog down and it feels more than adequate to pass other cars quickly.
I love the 6 speed in the F87C.

TL-DR: The S55 is geared towards low to mid range punch. The S58 is geared towards high end power.
On my G80, if i'm in 4th gear and take off at ~ 2K RPM (about 42 mph) you get solid acceleration with zero lag.

To duplicate the S58 test, put your car in 4th gear and around 1200 RPM and punch it.

I had an F80 M3 DCT, and I find for everyday driving the G80 6MT is a much better DD and has a far superior motor.

No problem!

I have also had an N55 car before, but not M2.

I think at the end of the day, if the G87 6MT drives like the G80 6MT, there is no cause for any concern. Is the ZF8 faster? Sure, but for people that want the 6MT, it's an amazing combo. I love it. I actually had an M3 Comp Xdrive ZF8 on order, but cancelled it after driving one. It just didn't do anything for me. The 6MT on the other hand was exactly what I was looking for.

That applies to most all major makes discussed here and their products. Unless you are in a Pagani - your driving a megacorp special lol.

My conclusion: 2nd gear pull seems about the same (though upon closer inspection my revs reach 5k when James's reaches 4k ... but basically same speed) and the F87 clearly beats Throttle House's G87 on the 4th gear pull. But, with all that said, even on the F87 I'd say these pulls started kinda lame (especially the 4th gear one). I always try to keep my RPMs above 2k because I know that below 2K I just don't get the best performance. Earlier Thomas said that in the G87 its dead under 3.5k which ... I hope he's exaggerating because thats certainly not the case with the F87. I'm really curious to hear from the people who will be picking up their G87s in the coming days/weeks.
Reflecting on this a bit, I noticed that in the 2nd gear pull James starts saying “into the threshold” about 2 seconds after I started feeling extremely strong pull.

Maybe he starts feeling into the threshold while he was still finishing saying his third “nothing”. But I was feeling a lot of pull by the time he said his first “nothing”.

Make of that what you will. I still think the tests themselves are silly. Looking forward to owners starting to take delivery and sharing their own thoughts.

This same discussion existed in 2018 threads about OG M2 vs M2C.

I get what you're saying, but I disagree that it's useful to people wondering about manual vs auto.

The automatic shifts to stay on the power and an owner of a manual will downshift into the powerband too, they will never bog the engine to lug like Throttle House did, it isn't a realistic situation.

Throttle House knows that isn't actually going to happen and did it to get clicks and attention. Now that they have been called on it and realize it's negative attention, they are trying to do damage control. However, instead of coming clean and acknowledging that it was unrealistic, they are still bitterly clinging to the claim that the test was valid.

If, for some reason, Throttle House actually believes that the test was legit, then they are posers because they should know that no owner will do that in their car.

Are some people really on the fence about manual or automatic? Seems like you should know what you want. I can just see a few people not being happy with the switch from DCT to slushbox, but the ZF isn't terrible... Bigger decision for me are the seats

Seats are a tough choice. If it's a weekender you can probably live with carbon seats. You can always get a custom foam pad for the lumbar if needed

Deoending on one's size and health, there is nothing you could add to the seats to make them a viable option. Not trying to sway anyone's choice, just making realistic statements and providing my opinion.

And to anyone who isn't sure, good news! This is a thing where you can try before you buy. Both the 6MT and ZF8 are used extensively across the BMW line, so hit a dealer and try them out.

Just FYI - my SA who owns an F87CS, parked my G87 right next to his and sent me pics. He gasped when he saw the difference in presence.

I'm not saying the F87 doesn't look good. But next to the G87...it's not nearly as good as people think. And in due course - they will absolutely migrate to the new car design.

Edit: we FaceTimed and I snapped some shots with intent to compare/contrast - not the same - want to make sure I'm not pulling a TH moment.

Reported for teasing a pic w/o sharing. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

TBH, I love the looks of my F87, but I’ve already looked at it and thought to myself that I can see it starting to look dated next to a G87. To me though, M coupes have all aged really well. I’m not a fan of the look of the E36, but aside from that I think they’re all still beautiful cars - M3s, M4s,1M, M2... My neck still snaps when I see an E46 going down the road.

Very good point. Most M cars age pretty darn well!
