Even rarer was the Sportwagon (shooting brake) variant.

Those who admire the styling of the Jaguar E type (who doesn't?) will appreciate the lines of the competition model D type of 1954-57. There is a definite family resemblance.

Only 87 D types were built. They had a 3.4 liter inline six with 250 horsepower and 4-speed manual gearbox. The price was high: $9,875 new in 1954.

The curb weight was a mere 1,929 pounds.

Of similar vintage to the Jag D type was the first Chevrolet Corvette as General Motors sought to get some of those "sports car" sales for themselves.

The 1954 Corvette featured its signature fiberglass body on a steel frame and had a 3.9 liter (236 cubic inch) straight six of 150 hp transmitting power through a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Manual transmissions were in the future.

The curb weight was just 2,700 pounds and the Corvette went out of the door in the USA for $3,525.

Most have seen this photo of "the King of Cool" in his Jaguar XKSS...but did you ever notice the reflection of a first gen Corvette (C1) in the Jag's right rear fender?

"D-Types won Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957. After Jaguar temporarily retired from racing as a factory team, the company offered the remaining unfinished D-Types as street-legal XKSS versions, whose perfunctory road-going equipment made them eligible for production sports car races in America."

Here's a XK150's rear deck lid...proudly proclaiming those LeMans wins...

The sign on the left said "First National Bank" and below that, "Eugene".

Most of the cars were mid-50's vintage or older.

That gave me a potential city and time frame.

From there, I searched for pictures of Eugene's Main Street in the 1950's.

Eventually, I found a couple that matched with the signs on the parade route (look at the "Heilig" sign in the back of the pictures and "Stanley's Del-Ray Restaurant") and the hill at the very end of the street. That confirmed the location and the city.

Next, I cross-indexed a list of the cities that the Futurliners visited from 1953-1956.

The only time the Futurliners were in Eugene, Oregon was on March 29, 1956. They stayed at the Eugene Hotel and put on the display at the University of Oregon campus.

My Search-Fu was strong tonight.

R.

I love your search approach. There's I trick I use sometimes. Classmates dot com allows you to search high school yearbooks by year. I saw Eugene on the the bank sign just like you did so I searched classmates for high schools in Eugene. I selected Eugene High School 1957 yearbook. In the back of many yearbooks is the advertising section. It's literally a snapshot in time of the businesses and often includes the street addresses. I can see if a business in the photo is listed as an advertisement and get the street address to verify.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, I'm retired!

Here is Stanley's Del Rey Restaurant ad in the 1957 yearbook on this screenshot from the yearbook.

Having posted about the BMW 327, it seems only natural to follow with the 328 sport car. The 328 had the more powerful 80 hp engine as standard. It was in production from 1936 to 1940, during which time 464 were built.

Among Ferrarista, the Ferrari 365GT 2+2 is often referred to as the "Queen Mother" due to its size. It was produced from 1967 to 1971. It featured power steering and air conditioning as standard and had an independent rear suspension with Koni/Ferrari-developed self-leveling. The 4.4 liter V-12 produced 320 hp. 800 examples were built. As with all the 2+2s, they are less collectible (and more attainable) that the two-seat cars.

1980 Bristol Beaufighter with a 5.9-liter turbocharged Chrysler engine good for over 150mph.

The fender doors gave you access to the spare on one side and the battery on the other. The targa roof could be stored in the trunk.
