Seems like odd tuning by BMW here. Probably an over reaction to the OG F80 that had gobs of torque down low and had no traction.

Directly from the video you posted: flooring it from 55mph at 2500~ RPM on a gear that tops out at 140mph is still way too lowwwww, in my opinion. If a person constantly going to be doing that, it's a driver skill issue, not a pure design flaw. Downshift into 3rd gear, which is where you're supposed to be, and you're going to be flying off from dead center on the power band.

I spoke to my friend with the Porsche dealership, she knew of the video and said that the salesmen all had a good laugh and would be sure to discuss the T.H. 4th gear challenge with anyone cross shopping her cars.

interesting. now 2 reviewers with manuals now claim there is moderate turbo lag and lack of low end at 3000rpm or under

It's pathetic how desperate people are to find an issue with this car where there's not one. First it was too ugly, then it was too heavy, and for the last couple weeks all that's left is how it takes too long to hit peak performance while in the wrong gear

Well, I finally got to drive our hea. I can confirm the lag. I own f87c and it pulls hard and instantly in almost any gear. The g87 definitely has lag to power and doesn't feel like it's as fast as the f87. I didn't run it anywhere near redline as it's brand new, and I'm not sure if it would feel different after the running in service. My wife said that it felt fast from the passenger seat, but it just didn't feel awe inspiring I was hoping for. All the tech is cool, despite all the hate, I really like the look of it. I'm number 2 in line at our small dealer, with no ryhme or reason with allocations, I'm stuck wondering if I should start looking for well priced f87 CS or if I should risk trying to tune the g87 to drive like it should.....

I may have driven my HEA car up to about 7k RPM when I test drove it... definitely pulls hard all the way up. The only time I thought "Oh S***, I have to shift!" was when I heard the engine noise and not because it ran out of breath. I'm no pro, but it was enjoyable as far as cars go, minus the high clutch engagement point (will be looking at aftermarket solutions when I get there)

I have had mine for almost 2 weeks and cannot agree with the "lack of power." I am able to get to speed with traction much quicker than my OG or CS and it just keeps going! But I almost shift between 4500-50 ( still in break-in). If someone wants a stop light rocket buy something with xdrive, or a blow dryer from Tesla. I'm not a race car driver, but I've owned a Plaid, GTS and several other "faster cars" and the G87 is no slouch. It's just a newer vehicle that is less (raw/unrefined) and has been signed after a starwars lego set. I'm still surprised people are so opinionated about this car, it's a car. If you don't like it, don't buy it and shit all over the forum. I don't go to the F87 forum and take fat dumps there. I get MAGA vibes from some of those people. It's a vehicle, not your personality. If you like it cool, pull up a seat and enjoy the koolaid. If not, cool too. |

While my M2 (w/6-speed manual, CF roof) weighs a bit more than my for example 2003 Porsche 996 Turbo 6-speed manual (which weighed in at around 3480lbs) the M2 has 453hp (vs. 420hp for the Turbo).
And the Turbo even back in 2003 stickered for $119,000. I'll take the M2 for a bit under $69,000 thank you very much. |

i think the lower low end punch and turbo lag is just a byproduct of what they were going for and the constraints they had. they needed to beat the F87's lap times, while doing so in a heavier car with the same 3.0 liters of displacement to work with.
big turbos = more power. but also less low end and more lag. BUT if you keep the car above 4-5k it will move. no doubt it will be faster than the the f87c in terms of lap times and and acceleration. ideally with a larger turbo and increased weight you want more displacement which will give you better throttle response and less turbo lag. but you can blame the EPA/EEA for that.

Is it though? I don't see it that way. It is heavy, but that weight makes it comfortable, capable, and most importantly relatively cheap.
The way I look at it, this is the BASE M2 and MSRPs at < $63K. It's not a CS, or Comp, and definitely not the CSL. I'm OK with the weight if it allows me to get a car like this for the cost. It's easy to lighten. |

(Puts on old man hat)
Kids these days, spoiled by their N55 dual scrolls and TQ at 1800 RPM. Back in my day I had to walk to school using ZZ engines that made no power below 5000RPM, in the snow, both ways. On a good day we'd get to use the F20C and hope the VTEC didn't call in sick. (peak HP at 7500!! RPM) And don't even get me started on my motorcycle! More seriously, yes, I do love my N55 for tooling around, but it ABSOLUTELY gasses out at the high end. I grew up on 4 cylinder NA engines, so keeping the revs up is "part of the fun" and the S58 doesn't bother me a bit. But I understand that some people think rowing gears is work, not fun. And that's perfectly OK. The 6MT isn't a good fit in that case, and I'd really advise that crowd to grab the auto. Also: seriously, I regret not acquiring and holding into an S2000, to this day. Great motor, great shifter. |

It does seem like the shorter low gears on the auto would be a little more helpful in these situations.
