Teaching my 16 year old to drive and its practicing braking hard, but not swerving on most sudden emergencies. Specially for animals. Modern cars are engineered to protect you on head on collisions. Unless there is a high speed coming towards you or there is a path to avoiding a collision with minimal steering input just brake. High speed swerving rarely ends well. Back to the OP post. Very sorry it happened to your M2. But it does not look like any major damage, so fingers crossed it will be a speedy repair.

So? I would have hit 3 deer instead of one. What's your point? Damage was unavoidable.
There also wasn't "high speed swerving".

I understand that. I'm frankly surprised I don't ache at all, but I really just skimmed across a pile of rocks. No real jolts.

It was a generic point. Usually braking in a straight line in the direction of deer who may or may not be there when you get there is better than swerving and going off the paved surface. Trees, rocks, berms, poles are a lot harder than deer and there is zero chance they will more out of the way. In addition, you may hit them sideways with a lot less in crumple zones to absorb the impact. In any event. In your case you didn't hit anything hard, you are OK, and looks like vehicle will be easily repairable. So a sad but not really bad outcome. Good luck getting the M2 back on the road.

I have to ask, did Braman do msrp on the 23’s? When I bought my 22 from BMW of FTL, both Braman and Vista had nasty adm’s. FTL gave me MSRP and honored my $1500 USAA military incentive. |

Just catching up on this thread after being out of town. Justin I'm super glad you are Ok. You are a great contributor to this awesome group and forum. It looks like you are at a good repair shop and hopefully back out driving the M2 sooner rather than later.

Minor update. So I have State Farm insurance which isn't in this BMW Certified shop's network, so the shop wasn't going to do an estimate because SF doesn't accept their estimates. SF sent their own estimator and the shop explained that it would likely be low and they would have to send addendums for approval as costs increased through the repair.
Well today, the SF estimator said that they don't have this car in this database yet so they asked the shop to provide the estimate, and that SF would just approve it! Sweet, no dicking around with insurance back and forth on cost. I understand they need to mitigate their cost, but at least it'll be a realistic estimate now. Should have the estimate from the shop tomorrow.

I used to have SF and hated them. They cheeped out of everything they could. I always take my car to a BMW Certified shop and I would never use SF ever again. I only had them for 3 years while I was living in TX. I have now been with Mercury Insurance for close to 12 years in CA. Love them and they don't cheap out or dick around. I hope your experience with SF goes better than mine did.

So would you prefer it to be totaled out or fixed? Just curious. I know you previously said you put down 60% so that makes me think you might want it fixed. If you had put 0 down or little down and had GAP I would for sure want it to be totaled out personally. Was just curious on your thoughts. Sorry it happened to you. Nothing worse than your car getting hurt especially when it is no fault of your own i.e. DEER.

Also in the rare case it is Totaled out. When they give you the payout offer it is negotiable. It is based on what it would cost to buy your car currently with similar mileage. You then send them examples of cars for sale with similar options/mileage and you almost can always get more than what you originally received.....it is SF so who knows at the end of the day but thought I would mention it in the rare chance it comes up. |
