Real close, down to the steering wheel

I'd rather they try and stumble towards success than not try at all. Lets hope they continue to develop this into something great.

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but even the phone and nav icons are now at the bottom of the screen, something that points very clearly towards BMW getting rid of the iDrive controller as well.
Agree 100%. Dumb decision to get rid of the iDrive controller. New interior is terrible.

But every year it is the same s*** even worse now since every car company copies the same exact styling. Spartan, tesla interior. Remove buttons. Glue on IPad. Add touc b surfaces, remove high end materials. Insert gloss black plastic all over the interior and exterior.

It's BS.

This isn’t hard to understand…!

I can’t tell you how aggravating it is to find the recirc button, for example, and for some reason BMW has evolved their HVAC to turn off the recirc multiple times in a 10 mile commute with many diesel trucks and busses. I find the screen distracting but have learned to live with it. The recirc thing makes my blood boil almost on a daily basis. It’s three taps on the screen when it used to literally be on the steering wheel.
This is the biggest complaint on iDrive 8 for me too. I've solved it in the following manner: I added shortcuts for Recirculation and Auto-Recirculation to the swipe-down drawer. Drawer can be opened by nudgning the iDrive rotary controller forward. Then i just press on the rotary controller because the first shortcut in the drawer is set to Air-Recirculation.
When I want to disable it, I do the same thing and select the second shortcut.

It still bothers me that there is no visible indicator that shows current state of air-recirculation once you return to home screen. There isn't even one on the Climate Control screen. As User Interfaces and User Experience is my domain of expertise, I find all of this utterly ridiculous.

I can’t save it as a shortcut. How do you do that? I’ve tried the old method of clicking and hold. Thanks for your help

We recently bought a 21 X5 xDrive40i CPO fully loaded and it's been an absolute pleasure to drive and own. The quality of the materials and the pre LCI screen setup is perfect in my opinion. The painfully obvious cost cutting started in 2022 models and never stopped!

You can't long press on the item that opens Air-recirculation menu to create shortcut that shows the entire air-recirculation menu, but you can create shortcuts for individual presets within the Air-recirculation menu, if you get what i mean.

When you open the air-rec menu, there are 3 presets. You can perform long press on the "Air-Recirculation" item to add it to shortcuts, and long press on the Auto-recirculation item. Place the first item in the first shortcut slot (top-left position in the swipe-down drawer) to be able to quickly close the air intake via idrive controler action sequence: NUDGE FORWARD (opens drop.down drawer) and PRESS(presses on first shortcut).
And second shortcut is automatic recirculation for when you want to enable automatic air-intake when you're back in the clear air environment.

The more I think about this iDrive X, the more I see that its just the next iteration of 8 and 9.

The only real new thing is replacing the driver instrument screen with the 5" projection at the base of the windshield and extending it across.

The tacked on center screen (even the shape) and HUD are just evolutions of what we have now.

This is not much ado about anything, IMO.

The most important driving information is projected directly into the driver's line of sight on the left-hand side of the BMW Panoramic Vision (in left-hand-drive cars), above the steering wheel. The driver can personalise the content in the central and right-hand areas of the BMW Panoramic Vision via the central display. The integration of the BMW Panoramic Vision creates a 3D effect for the driver and passengers.

No it's not. What Lincoln has is an LCD screen.
That's closer to what BMW has NOW.

It will likely take away some weight due to much smaller LCD screen.

Trends in car design have always been a thing. That’s why we should take notice when there are deviations which could start new trends. The HUD looks like a deviation that could be interesting. Personnaly, I like the “glue on iPad” look. It creates less visual mass and isn’t trying to hide a rectangular screen in a round hole like the E90 interior tried. It looks very early 2000’s.

When a rock chips my windshield right now, I don’t need to replace the gauge cluster. Glad BMW has this figured out now. /s

Seriously in my 2022 G05 I have a rock chip dead center of where the info bar is on this demo. Rather than drop over $3k to get it fixed I’d just assume avoid this user interface altogether. This looks sloppy with the big dash and stupid wheel anyway.

I guess I’ll just move on to bro dozers. No chance that segment gets buttons taken away.

People often say and think that—until they cause a crash and kill someone.

The computer is giving you a message. It’s doing its job. You’re ignoring it, at your peril and those around you.

I’m a bit surprised that electronic screens haven’t yet been integrated more smoothly into car interiors.

Here’s an analogy from BMW Motorrad.

BMW motorcycles all used to have a discrete gas tank between the legs, and no fairing. Then in 1974 BMW introduced the R90S, with a handlebar fairing. Then there was the 1977 R100RS, then the R100RT, which had frame mounted fairings that flowed into the still-discrete gas tank. But it wasn’t until decades later when the bodywork was integrated with the rest of the motorcycle, instead of being obvious bolt-ons, and other changes were made such as relocating the gas tank to a new location (on some models).

I’m not a designer. I don’t know what should change in cars. But it seems odd that all cars still have the “iPad-on-the-dashboard” look, decades after the introduction of digital screens. Even this iDrive X maintains the screen on the dash, even as it cleverly integrates additional information at the base of the windshield.
