are online universities worth it?

I was just wondering since I plan on going back to school next year. I can see why they would be popular for people in my situation, learn at your own pace and on your own time. I work full time so I cant quit my job and be a full-time student since I have bills to pay. Do employers look at those online degrees as a real form of education or no? I have read somewhere that those schools arent accredited.

No they're just money makers.....part of the university experience is interacting with other students and hooking up with chicks

Some are legit. Probably best used to supplement a traditional degree for working professionals

Online degrees, unless from an accredited University, are a joke.

I've been considering the online Master of Computer Science degree from GA Tech but I'm not sure if it will be worth it. I mean, it's GA Tech, how could it not be a respectable degree? But I'm not a hiring manager so I don't really have a clue.

dont waste your time and money.

as an alternative you can take online classes from accredited schools. when i was in college i would always take 1 or 2 online courses/semester to earn credits faster.

I believe GA Tech is a legit school. But if they have an online program, it's there to make money, nothing more. It also imho cheapens the credentials of those who actually did the work to earn the same degree by attending in-person.

If the questions was rephrased as, "are online degrees/classes from accredited universities worth it?" I think the answers would be vastly different.

My advice would be to look into getting a degree via an online learning format from an accredited state school or something along those lines.

I don't think it really matters too much to employers. If you get a degree online from Indiana University, your resume is going to say you graduated from Indiana University, which is a great school. You'll learn the same things as the brick and mortar students but you won't have the same networking opportunities.

If online classes fit your schedule, I'd say go for it as long as the classes are taken at a reputable school.

This is very true. The main reason that more and more universities are adding an online option to their requirements is because they know that they can attract more people. I know that there are some people who have too many bills to pay and have to continue working and having the more flexible online option is great for them. As has been said, you will miss out on the network part, which is huge in college, but you can get the degree that you really want as well.

Why does it cheapen the credentials of those that attended class if they learn the same thing? In most cases, the same professor teaches the in-person class and the online class with the same material.

You can't tell by looking at my transcripts, nor my framed diploma, that I have still never set foot on the USC campus. The reagents of the University still conferred the Master of Science degree upon me.

Granted, the profs came to me physically, not electronically.

I could tell if I am a USC grad myself and ask you about the 9-0 and you have no response

I did my undergrad at GT and have two comments

1. No way would they make a program that is easier than physically going to class. In fact, they were very clear that students online should expect the same level of rigor as if they went to class... which means it will be intense. Good grades are earned at GT

2. It is incredibly cheap. I think the program costs less than 10k, which is half of the cost of in-state tuition for the same degree. Many 2-day seminars cost upwards of half of that anount, and they don't often carry the same weight as a MS from a school like Tech

I can see the need for an online option as well as the appeal. However like most on this thread have said, regional accreditation is a must, without it your degree isn't worth the paper that it is printed on.

In all honesty I can see online being almost more difficult in regards to pace of the course work, as well as forcing myself to sit down at home and actually doing it.

If you look around many state schools are starting to offer 100% online options and some online and on campus combos.

Even top business schools have online courses. That is just to sell the "taste" of their MBA program(s).

(not that real legit MBA is much greater) <---

^

I would rather get a 1/2 tank of gas on my vehicle with the money they spent on "student" business cards.

Right, but you cannot earn the degree online. Gotta love the people in the airport on weekends with Ivy League backpacks--their employer is investing a LOT of money in them.

Seriously, I have always found it humorous that we are in awe of athletes who make 40-70 mil. per year, like they are gods. But the avg. person can't name the hedge fund manager who made 3 billion (personally) in a year for 2013. Or the other 9 who cleared 1 billion in a single year.
