Just drive your car man, it's just a 3 series. What do you need a beater for? Enjoy your life.

Hmmm, I drive my M3 to my college too. Park in the back, get a good exercise and the rushed kids who are late will never go park that far back.

I've actually been thinking about picking up a Smart Car for driving to work. Saves on gas and keeps the miles off the new M3

I drive my car to college, what I've done is just park in a corner as to minimize the chance of someone hitting my car.

Why would you go and do something silly like that? Get a Fit, similar price, at least twice the space and you only lose like 5 mpg in the city while gaining over 50% more power. (70hp vs. 109hp) Also, I personally wouldn't feel safe in a smart car, have you seen how close the seat is to the back of the car and your legs are like a foot from the front bumper. Small crumple zones = lose.

US domestic model Ford Escort - I had one as a beater. I drove it from Boston <--> NYC and it returned 45mpg. I went at it too, topping out at 75mph or so (comfortable with the dash shaking a lil bit).

I drove the living crap out of it and it refused to die. I *think* it's actually a Mazda underneath... good car. I kinda wish I hadn't sold it.

I also had a Jeep XJ cherokee, which was a cooler car but while decently powerful (still sucks), the 4.0L I-6 was inefficient @ 13mpg.

Both were $1000

Seconded. In fact, I've been thinking of an E36 318ti as a beater, if I can find one in nice shape.

Yes I'd like to think thats a good cadi for the mileage on it, We use to have one before I cracked the taillights by backing it into a pillar slightly(this was when I was about 15-16 mind you) but either way we never had too much problems with it. Only got rid of it for an E-Class because my mother was sick of looking at the cracked taillight

+1 There's an article on them in the May issue of C&D. For the price, there are other vehicles with the same mpg but better utility in not too large of a package.

i've thought of e36s but the running costs would not be funny for a beater car...
