Question Anyone else receive an email from BMWFS requesting license plate number?

Anyone else get an email from FS requesting their plate number? It is a legit email.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) identifies drivers by their license plate number and references the license plate number on all communication sent to BMW Financial Services, the registered owner of your leased vehicle. Without a license plate number on file, we are unable to forward valuable information to you

What would DMV send to FS? I show as owner on the registration, so any correspondence from DMV would come directly to me. Just curious. At first I thought it was a scam email, but I looked at my statement and all the contact info is the same, and it shows my VIN and name.

Thanks all, happy Tuesday.

Why not just call BMW directly and verify?

It IS odd because BMW FS, being the actual title owner, can simply request that information DIRECTLY from DMV.

Check the email title details. It’s probably a phishing scam.

I have received that email on a couple of my leases in the past several years, it is legit. As the email states there are a few methods to get them the requested info:

•Reply to this email with your license plate number.
•Leave a voice message referencing your 10-digit account number and license plate number at 1-877-322-6526.
•Fax your license plate number along with your account number to 1-614-789-2641 or 1-614-789-1971.
•Mail your license plate number along with your account number to:
BMW Group Financial Services

It was legit. All contact info was the same. I did not and would not clink on links regardless. When I lived in NJ, I’m pretty sure the registration actually showed BMWFS. I know the insurance card said BMW. Now in NY I show on registration. So my point was if DMV has my info, there is no reason for them to send info to BMW for them to then send to me. DMV would send to me directly. When I called FS they said some BS about title transfer matters at lease end.

This most commonly has to do with failure to appear notices related to unpaid parking tickets. As the registered owner, BMWFS gets the notices and is liable for any fines or judgments unless they're able to cross reference the license plate number with the name of the Lessee. They have every right to ask the Lessee for that information, but I am sort of surprised that they don't already have it. Dealer should have sent that information to them at delivery. I currently lease a GTI for my son and my name appears on the registration that he carries, but the owner is Volkswagen. The parking ticket goon cannot see the kid's registration when he's writing a parking ticket, it's up to the DMV to connect the plates with the actual owner.

How does dealer know the license plate number at delivery?

yes, I did forget to split that particular hair: where I live the dealer will get the paper work back from DMV in 4-10 days at which point he should copy BMW.

Where I live it takes 3-4 weeks to get your license plates.

Where I live you get the plates on your car when you pick it up. It takes like 5 minutes to get a set of plates.
