My first week thoughts with the car

I picked it up a week ago. In the 8 days I've had this car I've already put 750 miles on it...and that mileage includes a 180 mile round trip to San Antonio. Needless to say the car is great! I'm so pleased I got it. Here are some surprises and nitpicks so far.

Surprises:
Comfortable ride: We all know how well it handles on the track but man I've been amazed at how comfortable it is for daily driving while in comfort mode. That's been my biggest pleasant surprise with the car.

Automatic window lowering: There's an app in Idrive 7 that can lower your window every time you reach a certain point. My company's parking garage requires badging so it comes in handy here. Plus, I park my car in my garage next to my wife's Pacifica. So getting out in a tight space with the window up is difficult so I just have it lower my window every time I pull in the garage.

Heads up display: The HUD is incredible! During my San Antonio trip, the map displayed in the HUD made navigating through San Antonio's labyrinth of downtown highways incredibly easy.

Thundernight metallic: This color really has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. A man admiring my car at the dealership told me when I was picking it up that he had just ordered one and changed the color of his to purple after seeing mine on the showroom floor. And I've already received several compliments from strangers about the color.

M Illuminated Trim: After I saw videos of this $250 trim option, I began to regret my decision. But after seeing it glow at night in person, I don't hate the option as much. I would still stick with the standard option if I could do it all over again. I'm just saying I can live with this choice better now than I previously thought I would.

Nitpicks:
Gas tank: The gas tank is only 13.7 gallons which is considerably less than the average gas tank size of ~16 gallons. That means this car has about 40-50 miles less range than the average car and ultimately means more frequent fill ups which is a bummer.

No sunglasses holder: My last three cars have had a holder in the ceiling for sunglasses... so this feels like a step back for me.

Cup holder too small: Cup holders in the center console are too small to hold water bottles. To BMW's credit, there is a holder in the door panels that will hold them.

Overall, I'm really loving this car. I can't wait to get more comfortable and knowledgable about it. All those months of frustration waiting for it to move through production have gone away. It was worth the wait!

I keep my sunglasses in the little compartment to the left of the steering wheel. I agree a real sunglasses compartment would be nice though.

As for the cup holders - incredibly, these used to be way worse and have gotten a little better each generation. The last gen 2 series didn’t have back seat cup holders at all. Learned that the hard way. And the E90 I had before that had these terrible, flimsy pop-out ones that would always jam and couldn’t hold anything. It’s clear the Germans don’t have any equivalent of our king sized fast food drinks.

Thanks! It probably would have taken me months to discover that compartment on my own!

The fuel tank is same as the previous F87 M2 comp at 13.7 gallons.

I was averaging around 340 km or 210 miles per tank. The constant refuelling did drive me crazy, especially during our winter months.

Can you advise what you are getting roughly per tank.

I've now had my 230i for 2 months. Overall, a great drive.

Nitpickng - or not: 1) Comfort access on the driver's side is hit or miss, especially when wearing gloves; always works on the passenger side; 2) with Apple Carplay active, no easy way to make a phone call - e.g., no button to push and then tell the car - or Siri - to call a given person. This is the case whether I am in Carplay or in BMW screens. 3) no way to turn off the automatic car door locks

Thank you so much for sharing the experience. These are exactly my doubts about the car. I have the thundernight on order as well and I have been thinking of switching it to black or white because of what I see in pictures. Now maybe i will just keep it as is. But the fact that it's a comfortable ride, is a good thing to hear for a commuter like me.

I also would like to thank drumhorn for his observations, most of which I fully concur. I had started a post this morning and was thinking like you danallxt I should wait.

I dropped mine off this morning to get PPF and Ceramic applied. I have only driven a little over 500 miles in just under 3 weeks. I am super happy with the Thundernight Metallic choice and can't wait to see what it looks like when I pick it up. I also find the ride comfortable which I will appreciate when I leave soon on a drive to Florida from NJ. I tend to stop every 2 hours so the smaller gas tank shouldn't be an issue for me. Cup holder works fine with my 12 oz. travel coffee mug as does the side compartment for sunglasses.
Looking forward to finishing the break-in period also !!

Over the years, I've developed an aversion to calculating my mpg due to my extremely heavy foot. So unfortunately I don't know.

I just did my second fill up. First one was 24mpg. Second was 27mpg (more Hwy than city). Not too shabby considering I too have a heavy foot lol.
