Anyone else cross shopping?

Anyone else cross shopping other makes and models? Right now I am all over the place. I currently have X3 M40i for family duty and an older civic beater, that barely gets driven, and am looking to add a third "fun" car to the mix. I have my name on a list for a Z06 and GT4, but it will probably be 2-3 years (if ever) before my name is called and honestly when push comes to shove I will probably pass due to the added financial responsibility I feel with a second kid just arriving.

In the meantime, I am #3 on my dealers lists for the G87 at MSRP and it's where I am currently leaning. Even though it's a completely different animal, I really like the more understated design of the new Civic Type R and having 4 doors and the practicality of a Honda is enticing. I am curious what others are cross shopping and whether any of you had wheel time in the previous generation Type R and think its underwhelming coming from an M2.

I am…looking (thinking) Cayman S, Cayman GTS, CPO 911, or the Emira.

If I had the means to get a C8 Z06 I'd instantly jump on it. Hell, you can turn around and sell it after driving it for a couple of years and get all your $$$ back, maybe even more. It would be a no brainer for me, but I'd also want to hang onto it forever, because that's one sick ride.

Everyone here that's also cross shopping other cars has also looked hard at the cars your listed, including yours truly.

Cool

Open to the idea of something else. Will depend on what I can cram my 6'5" frame into with my 37" long inseam...
Maybe the Merc CLE coupe? AMG version?

#1 on an allocation list for a G87
Vehicles I've thought about or currently cross shopping

2023 Z4 M40i - A few years ago I was seriously considering this as I was looking for a smallish sporty luxury coupe. Convertible wasn't necessary but this had everything except that it didn't have a manual transmission. The 2023 LCI will so I'm back to considering it

Emira - Honestly this would probably be number one over getting a G87 because I love the style. Reasons it's not number 1 are performance doesn't match the looks and I live too far from Lotus dealerships.

718 GT4 - Would love to get one with a manual. At MSRP, this would stretch my budget. With the way the market is right now, I could easily get 2 G87s for the price of one GT4 so it's a no go for me

6 months ago I cross shopped between a 2021 Supra and a 2021 M2 competition.

Knowing the G87 was around the corner I knew I would’ve regret the F87 wether it made the car look out dated or just me wanting to get the S58 car, so I got the supra.

After getting the supra I realized how much more the M2C offered over the supra, for not much difference in price. Things like the drilled brakes, DCT, S55 to name a few.

But I been enjoying the car and my only complain is how tight the cabin and trunk is. I don’t need a more practical car, but out of preference I will be trading in the supra for a G87 (Already have a deposit placed) I’m also excited for the S58 engine and seeing what a real M car is all about.

The only other car in this price range I’d consider is a low optioned C8 corvette if at MSRP, but I feel like this might be even smaller cabin and cargo space than the supra so I rather not do that to my self for a daily driver.

Not really.

If they offered a targa top Supra in manual, then I'd probably go that route.

I sat in the supra (indy dealer wouldn't let me test drive, I was pissed) and I actually liked the tight interior but I get it. It def is small in there. The C8 is a nice looking car too but for me, I need something I could put on winter tires and drive in the winters. I can't see myself doing that with the C8 like I can with a Cayman or M2. That could just be me though.

Not really as my build on a manual Cayman GTS is $110k so it and a G87 are not really comparable. Plus allocations for a Cayman/Boxster GTS are slim to none. Most individuals are well aware that this is the end of the line for both models with full ICE.

That is a nicely specced GTS my friend. Mine was about $101K which is still high for me but in all honesty if I could get my hands on the non 4.0 GTS for a decent price and low miles I would def consider it.

The manual part yes…I haven't heard anything about a targa top.

I might be in the minority here, but if the RS3 was available in the states in hatchback form, I might've been able to forgive it's shortcomings in exchange for the sexy 5 pot + huge practicality advantage.

But it doesn't…and I love our G42 so I have high hopes for the G87.

I am all over the place. I would snag a G80 in a heartbeat if a customer delivery falls through at my local dealer. I am on waitlists for the IS500 (NA V8 is the main reason), GR Corolla (stick shift/awd combo with LSDs front and rear), and Golf R (again manual/awd combo).

If I didn't have to have back seats for my kids, C8 Corvette and 718 (either Boxster or Cayman) would be very high on my list. Upcoming Supra manual would be very intriguing too...

I like the 718 and the Emira also for the lack of back seats as my wife and I do not have kids.

I am right with you on that. I am keeping my civic just so I can have 2 cars with with 4 doors but 95% of the time we take the X3. I am open to a dedicated 2 seater but it starts to get hard to justify a C8 or 718 when my kids (who are <4) can't even go for a ride until they move out convertible car seats.

The RS3 feels like a more practical car, I am in NE so the AWD would be nice, but outside of the 5-cylinder exhaust note, I feel like the M2 is the better car in every other category that matters to me.

Same here, my kids are 4 and 2. Maybe when my younger one can be on a booster, I will consider a 911. As for the RS3, no heated steering wheel (not even as an option) is a dealbreaker for me. I am also not a fan of the new front end design with the giant black grill.
