Who else is excited about crank hub slip worries being gone?
I’ll admit one of the reasons I never pulled the trigger on an S55 was the crank hub slip concerns. I like to mod my cars and this would’ve been a real nightmare if something were to have happened.
There were too many documented cases (I’ve actually talked to techs that have had to do the job a number of times) on the S55 cars. Numerous cases can be found online. That whole thing just goes away with B58 / S58. What still has me concerned a bit are the claims that’s the MT can only handle 406ft lbs. How common are issues with MT S58 cars?

Don't worry, be happy.
Modding any car comes with risk. I wouldn't worry too much on the torque rating if you are just doing a tune+bolt-ons. If you start replacing turbos and upgrade fueling, then you might need to worry. If you have to mod and MT strength is a concern, go 8AT. The crank hub has been overblown, just like the IMS bearing issue on 911's. |

Every engine will have its “issue”. 911s had IMS, Focus RS had the head gasket. Many times these “issues” are blown out of proportion, maybe even by a third party vendor trying to sell some extra parts and/or services. I really hate these type of fear mongering posts.
Do your preventative maintenance early and often, and most importantly enjoy the car! Stop worrying about theoretical problems that don’t even exist yet. |

Don't confuse the max TQ for the actual max TQ the transmission is capable of handling. Sometimes it's listed as max TQ the 3rd party manufacter of the transmission would warranty the unit for automaker.

With a grain of salt:
Remember that even the upper limit guidelines are averages of failures, and then with some added padding. If you wish to take the chance, and most everything is a "chance", modding the car will push you into the risk groups. Probably not the most helpful advice, and I apologize for that. Probably the only 2 places where the failure values will truly be known: 1) BMW engineering team, and 2) any racing team that has done the work to dyno to failure. That being said, I owned 2 of the "Engines of Damocles" cars. An E46M3 and an E92M3. Both went pretty far with some hard running, and at least in the E46 case, BMW pretty much forced me to have the bottom end swapped. The Tech was a friend and said the parts were perfect. So I suspect that BMW can sometimes be very conservative. |

Much less so than not. Anecdotally: my 2005 E46 ZHP has 115k on the clock and has taken its fair share of hard hits on developing world (American) roads. Subframe still perfect. My 2006 997 has a working IMS and clean bores. My GT4 didn't blow out strut towers or lose the third gear and I tracked the shit out of it. Had an E46 and E92 M3, too. And when I see the cars that it actually happens to, I'm rarely surprised. Some are just unlucky, but a lot of people really (sometimes unknowingly) abuse their cars, both in terms of use and maintenance. I teach high performance driving fundamentals and still regularly get students who come in thinking that dropping into a lower gear and slipping the clutch is "engine braking" (correction: that's just called "destroying the clutch and driveshaft"), and have no idea what rev matching involves ("that's only for the track, bro") or what a heel-toe downshift is. Evidently, BMW had good reason to enable auto-blip by default on the F8X cars. Warm it up properly, cool it down properly, use the proper lubricants. And on top of that, stay off the fly-by-night power mods.

Yup - no more S55 engines for me … Absolutely had the worst experience with my 2015 F80, spun crank hub at 18k (no tune) then punctured oil cooler at 23k
