Digital Key Plus G42 (2023)

I’ve recently taken delivery of my 2023 G42. Very pleased with it! It comes with the standard Digital Key (IOS) which seems to work well.

I have heard there is a new Digital Key Plus BMW are starting to role out which works with UWB.

I did read that the new Digital Key Plus requires new hardware in the vehicle however others have said it’s just a software update.

Does anyone know if the 2023 model has the required hardware onboard to enable a software update by BMW at some point in 2023 to enable Digital Key Plus?

Thanks. Yes, I was aware it required a hardware update. Just wondering if BMW upgraded the hardware in the 2023 G42 already and will push the new ‘plus’ functionality via a software update later. Hopefully so

Looks like it may work with our car. I combed the web and this was the only thing I could find. They are very vague with the Info. Have you tried adding a digital key with both physical keys in the car? That seems to be a requirement.

Thanks. It certainly ticks all the boxes! Hopefully the 2023 with idrive 8 just requires a software update/push by BMW when they are ready to do so!

I have added both Digital Key Card and iPhone already but right now seems to only be digital key standard.

Not yet. Doubt it’s possible.

I’m going to ask around, I’m a genius myself. From what I’ve seen every car with the new style key fob (X1, X5,X6,X7, XM and the new 7 series) have digital key plus. I don’t know if the new style key fob has anything to do with it but it’s something that I noticed.

I got an email the other day saying my car (2022) was receiving an update for Digital Key but it only mentioned key sharing...

Quote:
Hello ***,

The BMW Digital Key function in your BMW M240i xDrive with the VIN ************* has been prepared for enhanced functions via an update.

Sharing keys is now possible on Android devices, as well as between iOS and Android devices. If you have already set up your Digital Key, you can begin using this function if your smartphone is compatible and the software has been updated.

To set up your Digital Key, you must first activate your compatible smartphone as the digital main key. Each vehicle only has one digital main key which has permission to share and manage additional digital keys.

To activate via your smartphone: enter your BMW with both vehicle keys and your smartphone with this email. Choose one of the following options and follow the instructions:

You can find information on compatibility and additional instructions for use at the following link:

From what I've read, it looks like g42s built from November 22 will be compatible but hard to confirm.

I'm due for a new phone and I'm thinking Galaxy 23. I usually get the small size (does not have UWB) but the Digital Key Plus sounds convenient enoug to buy the next size (does have UWB)

I've been thinking buying one just try.

At the moment you have to put the phone on the door handle to open it and when inside you have to place the phone on the wireless charging tray to start it, but with UWB you can keep the phone in your pocket the same as your current key

This is a proper quality of life improvement. I always thought the phone to the door was very finicky.

Remote parking could be handy with the long door when someone parks stupid close but not something I'm likely to trust!

Allegedly, any builds from 2022 on with comfort access have plus available.
I'll have to check on my 135, I have comfort but no charging tray so have never tried the digital key but plus might work.

It will be good if it works like comfort access does i.e. you have to put your hand on the door. However, I think with the nature of UWB, it will work as you approach or walk away from the car which is a total PITA.
Every time you walk out the house, past the car it will unlock, and possibly re lock - if you’re lucky.

Unless you’re parking in your own garage, I can’t see a need for remote parking (not that I think the 240i would get that). If there’s not plenty space between me and the car next to me, I’ll park where there is.

My only thought was more when you park miles from anywhere in the car park and still some chump comes along and tucks theirs in tight.
Being able to back out the car without fighting to get in or clambering over the passenger seat would be a neat trick.

Still don't think I'd trust it though tbh

Who parks nose in? Amateur.

You know you can drop the window with a double press of the unlock button in those tight situations.

To be honest, if I'm not using the car then I don't have the fob in my pocket, I don't want to carry bulky keys around for no reason, so I've never had a problem with it locking/unlocking unnecessarily.

I don’t carry the key either. The locking /unlocking currently only works with the fob so if it’s not in your pocket it wouldn’t currently be an issue.
