Toronto Red - Different in the Flesh?

In anticipation of the M2 launch, I spent some time researching colors this weekend. Am I losing my mind, or is Toronto Red quite a bit different in person?

I expected some "orange" in the mix based on what I've read. I didn't expect the distinct pinkish "salmon" tone on the M4 and XM I came across.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Or does the camera lie? Maybe it's a tough color to capture? I love it in most photos.

Here's a shot I took of the M4. Looks fantastic, but I assure you it didn't pop like this in real life.

In my opinion TR does seem to wash out/fade in full sunlight. With that said, I have TR spec’ed for myself in our order bank.

I haven’t seen a single Toronto red car that actually looks red. I’ve only seen them during a sunny day and as you said, it’s looks more salmon or orange.
In my opinion, this pic looks a lot more realistic to what Toronto red actually is.

Just a slight wrinkle to consider here. Color a person perceives to see is a function of both eyes and brain which are unique to an individual. So, factor in sunlight, artificial light (LED, incandescent, fluorescent) it’s not unusual for 5 or 6 of us to see different shades. I read a terrific book on neuroscience recently and it explains this phenomenon. Or not

It's going to look different to everyone everywhere depending on their display and the camera that was used to take the photos. If you actually want to judge the color, go see it in person.

That's why I delurked and started the thread. In my personal experience, Toronto Red presents differently in photos than in the flesh. Just curious if other people feel the same way.

I guess I expected a "redder Sakhir Orange", and some photos give that impression. Most photos show a very saturated "true red". I didn't find either to be the case in person. There's a salmon tone that isn't coming across.

Watch the Car Magazine review video on YouTube. Their demo was a TR car and there are several good still shots and rolling video of the car.

I agree on the salmon-ish tone thought. Back in October at the PC 50th M event there were a few talking about the ZB G87 M2 on display and how that blue looked like it was "milky" and not a deep rich color, especially when viewed in direct sunlight. That morphed into Toronto Red discussions whereby we inspected numerous TR cars present (G80 M3, X4M, etc) since the M2 was going to be available in TR. TR also looked like it had milk mixed into the paint, especially when seen in direct sunlight. If you compare a TR car next to a "pure red" paint like Guards Red, Ferrari Red or even BMW Electric Red (Japanrot), TR looks milky, dreary by comparison.

Exactly. I very well may have been part of this conversation, but it was had amongst many.
