G87 M2 Vs Alfa Romeo Gulia QV (MY 24/25) facelift
WHICH one would you choose??
Opinions please? I need to make a decision over the next couple of months. Both seem like truely capable cars in their own rights. I am not yet a massive fan of the G87 blocky leggo type design but it is slowly growing on me and I love the wide rear fenders. I like the Gulia design but hate that the QV is nearly exactly the same design wise at the other standard Gulia cars. |

They are not in the same class, the Giulia's competitor is the M3.
That being said, the Giulia Q is a great car to drive (I'd put it above the M3 in terms of pure driving), but rubbish in terms of everything else, it's a very dated car and - as far as I know - the Quadrifoglio hasn't received the MY24 updates yet (and who knows if, what and when). It was a good car when it came out, but as is always the case with Alfa, it's aged very badly and hasn't received any significant updates. Plus, add the terrible sales and service network and the extremely high depreciation. |

Pick an M2 if:
* You can't afford an $80K car. * You want an MT. * You like BMW's take on tech (iD8). * You want a coupe. Pick a QV if: * You want roomier rear seats (seats 5). * The M2 is too insulated a driving experience for you. * You aren't bothered by reliability issues. For me personally, MT is non-negotiable, so I never considered the QV. |

For me, a manual transmission isn't a 'must have' and the Gulia QV does still seem like an interesting alternative. They are in a similar price range and budget for me here in the UK.
Its going to be a close call between the two for me. I have seen the Gulia many times but not seen an M2 in the flesh yet.....I hope it is not as Lego-ish as people say. |

After a couple years I was ready to get of rid of it. If it had a manual, I would think differently. But only because a manual with that engine and car would be a ton of fun. |

I owned a QV and it was a great daily driver, I definitely missed a manual, but everything else was perfect...except the insane amount of check engine lights and other glitches. P0303 codes weekly and the dealer said thats normal haha. I wound up owning it for less than a year and leased an Elantra during that time as a back up car lol. Got rear ended on the BQE by an 18 wheeler and now I'm waiting for my g87 . If I was you id test drive both cars and see what really speaks to me and keep in mind the alfa dealer network is pretty bad and their reliability is pretty bad.

Leased a non QV Giulia. Loved the car. Roomier than the M2; great sound and performance in general. Dealer/Service network sucked a$$ all day every day. And it was frequently there. The QV is at least 2 steps needier than the non QV. I'll agree its a great performance buy but if you plan to own after the warranty runs out it will need to be a non daily driver.
Other comments on updates and age of infotainment, etc. are true. No significant updates have occurred in 7 years and none are really planned. I would question how long the Giulia will be supported.

I had several BMWs over the years. Including E92 and F82. Now driving QV. It's different from modern BMWs in every possible way. It has all typical comfort features such as heated seats, adaptive cruise control, etc. No heads up display, which is no big deal for me. Coming from full two tone leather M340i, Alfa feels very dated inside and on some days it bugs me but it's not a reason to buy/sell a performance car.
The big advantage of QV compared to any modern M3/M4 is drivability. In default setting it is not stiff at all and can be driven normally even on poor roads. Last two generations of M3s felt harsh to me in any mode. Some might like it. For me with roads quality in Toronto, not sure I am ok with the sacrifice. I had one issue where battery died. Have gone through service engine light, battery replacement by the dealer and then bunch of other lights. Dealer was useless. Eventually I discovered that new battery wasn't properly connected and that what was causing issues. So yes, not a good experience from dealer perspective. That being said, I had problems with BMWs that dealers weren't able to diagnose either. The build quality of any BMW feels superior. Materials appear to be more premium as well. Personally I am looking for the overall experience and Giulia QV is tons of fun. Someone said that QV stands for Quirky Vehicle and I tend to agree |

BTW, the correct name is Giulia Quadrifoglio, it was never Quadrifoglio Verde (QV).

Hi! I am a former Giulia QV owner, and had to sell it just because I was moving from Germany to Italy and the taxes would have been very steep. I will get my M2 on Wednesday, so I cannot compare it yet. I can tell you that the Giulia is an amazing machine and one of the cars I regret the most selling.
Exterior design is subjective, but to me it looks amazing. The Giulia QV will get a refresh, I believe by the end of the year. As of now just the base model received a refresh in the headlights and the infotainment. The engine is a simphony, derived from the V8 Ferrari that you could find on the California (even if Alfa denies it), with 2 cilinders less I had it completely stock, and a tested it on the dyno: 490hp, so not exactly the claimed 510. Still the car was pulling very strong thru the whole rev range. Sound was also amazing for a stock exhaust. Given it was my weekend car I didn’t care too much about the features like assisted driving, infotainment, and so on. Obviously the car has everything you need, but is not at the level of the Germans in terms of quality and tech. Still a step up over the average Italian car 😃 Ride quality is amazing, also compared with the RS3 (8Y) that I owned afterwards. Absolutely comfortable and able to manage all the situations. Chassis is also amazing, the car feels very balanced in every situation. Pushed it to 303 km/h with ease. Gearbox is a ZF, so very strong and reliable. No issues at all. The aluminum paddles were amazing to touch, and shifting in Race mode a pleasure for the soul. I drove it about 12.000km in one year, never had a single issue. Hope this helps! PS: I enjoyed the fact that from the front it is difficult to tell it is a Quadrifoglio (just from the lateral air inlets), so on the highway you could bother 98% of the cars and leave them behind 😉 |

I've owned 2 M2's and an 18 QV, along with a dozen M cars.
QV drive is magical, nothing else like it from any BMW, ever that I've owned or driven. Its Ferrari like emotion vs. german logical engineering. But I had to sell mine since it kept breaking down, and the dealer had no clue. Sold it for an 18 M2. The M2 driving experience was a major let down vs. the QV. Poor steering, lack of feel, drives like a brick vs. the magic QV suspension, steering, and chassis. However everytime I started the car I knew it would take me to my destination and not leave me stranded!

When I lived in Europe, I was always intrigued by Alfas. But then I learned they were for people who wanted an emotional connection but not necessarily in a good way. When they run, they run great and are beautifully designed cars, but they tend to have a lot of problems. And for that reason they tend to also depreciate at a higher rate than their competitors. Supply chain issues since COVID has probably masked some of the depreciation but as things normalize, I expect it to return to normal.

A slight OT thought I had.
I have money down on a Lotus Emira, with a probable delivery date after the next ice-age. So I sauntered over to their forums and has some small PTSD eruptions. It brought back all of my Mclaren horrors. It's like they copied their playbook: Half-finished cars, limp mode, paint drips, rust, missing bolts, water leaks, panels falling off, never ending electrical woes, wipers that don't work, and on and on. My 570 had all of that and more. They were a cool company and bought it back, but only after a year of: 1 day of great driving, followed by 2 months in the shop. The issue with the Guilia, is that it has the exotic car problems but ain't no exotic. When they would truck my 570 away, I could still take my M3 to work. What happens when your daily is a POS? And it may have lots of good attributes, but my pals who tried italian cars, all wound up chewing dirt. The first time you miss work, stuck on a back street in some bad neighborhood, with the dash-alert reading "Carro no functione, shoulda boughta de porscha", you'll feel the burn, LOL! |
