Noob Intro

Hello All,

I'm Brandon. Just wanted to introduce myself real quick. I have a few BMWs and I've been lurking in the forums for useful information for years now, but never registered or posted.

The E46 M3 is the car that sparked my interest in BMW and cars in general. I always hoped to buy a M3 someday, then just drive M3s forever. By the time I was financially comfortable enough to buy one it was the G82. Looks are subjective, some will love it, some will loathe it, and that’s okay. I'll just say the styling definitely isn't for me which led me to start looking into the G87.

Ive started lurking in the forums a lot more leading up to the release of the G87. Long story short... I put down a deposit last fall, first on my dealers list (besides the HEA car), got an allocation early June, then drove myself crazy watching reviews and obsessing over the M2 all summer long. I finally took delivery of my new baby on Wednesday and 28 hours later a teenager crashed into me. My buddy (passenger) and I are a little stiff, but I'm glad that no one involved was seriously injured. Happy my little ones weren't with me. That’s the most important thing...

Errrr but its not the only thing. My poor little M2. I know cars can be replaced, but that wait was brutal. If it's not totaled i'll always have the term "structural damage" in the back of my mind. The plan was to keep the G87 as a fun/weekend car for a very long time (forever ) and have something practical on the side as a daily driver. Anyway I figured if I must endure another brutal wait or live with damaged goods I may as well register, introduce myself, and join in the fun with other M2 enthusiasts.

Man, that's a major bummer. Glad that you are alright and also your little one wasn't in the car. I will be using mine as kid carrier as well so I can totally understand the feeling.
Hope you and your G87 recover soon.

That is my worst fear… I drive around like a damn student driver every time I get a new car because I don’t trust anybody around me… can’t really defend from the rear. Hopefully your insurance totals it out and you can just order a new one. I would not want It back after that hard of an impact.

That's my hope, sadly I don't want it back. My plan was to get break in service and mods done before storing it for the winter. Best case scenario it's totaled and I can get an allocation for a winter build and have her by spring. I'd much rather start the waiting game over again.

Sorry to see this. Hope it gets sorted out. I would say g87 took the impact rather well judging from the outside. Hard to judge what’s up underneath.
While I don’t particularly baby mine, I have been worried about parts availability in event of an accident, being a new model and all.
On the other hand, it seems it takes little to total new BMWs. Parts are expensive. JustinHEMI serves as recent example. What seemed reasonably superficial ends up total loss.
Let us know how this shakes out.

Justin’s car was nowhere near a total loss.
Crap. Sorry. I must be misremembering. Should re-read. It was a lot though.

It's what's underneath that worries me the most. Those white marks in the road (pics from original post) came from the exhaust dragging the ground while I moved out of the road. The body shop seems to think it can be fixed in nine days.

Here's my thread. As you'll see, it rose to over 30K in repairs, but it was repairable. Mine got high centered on the exhaust and it took most of the damage.

Yours will be fine, just may take some time for parts availability. If the shop says 9 days, maybe what they need is available.

Good luck!

Thanks dude. I read through all 14 pages of your ordeal, and while frustrating, it definitely answered many of my concerns. I'm dealing with State Farm too, not my insurance company but the insurance of the at fault driver. $32K because of a deer sucks. Guessing off the top of my head I'll end us somewhere around $35K - $40K, which is less than $52K - $56K that would be 70-75% needed to total it.

I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement. I'll keep everyone updatedas this unfolds.

That teenager driving the Volvo should be ashamed. Hope they can fix it quickly & you can begin enjoying it again. Glad you & your friend were not hurt.

That's unfortunate. 28 hours later to have that happen is just ... words fail me.

But even 28 days makes for a horrible/miserable experience. My 2008 Cayman S 4 weeks after I bought it... Pic of Cayman below. Along with the Cayman car killer. A Volvo...

Cayman S was declared a total loss.

9 days to fix your M2 seems a tad optimistic. Be sure you have selected the best shop and ideally not one with a business partnership with the at fault driver's insurance company. Demand *factory* parts. No OEM. No used/salvaged parts.

My SOP is to after the car is repaired I inspect it. I have some experience -- unfortunately -- doing this. But I either arrange to take the car to another highly regarded body shop to be inspected or at least take it to a dealer and arrange to have the car inspected by a tech.

In the case of my 996 Turbo which was repaired after a mule deer collision both the body shop and dealer techs found issues with the repair. I had a list. Oh, and this is after the body shop had had the car for around 30 days. Back to the shop the Turbo went. After *another* 30 days all the issues were addressed to my satisfaction.

Yeah I'm not holding my breath. Pains me to see the Cayman S like that.

That was back in May 2009. Time has faded the painful memory of that time. Helped in part because the car was declared a total loss.

But for other cars -- like my Turbo when about 3 weeks after I got it and hit a mule deer and more recently back in Jan 2021 2 months after getting a new 2020 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack and having it hit not once but 2 times -- two different nights -- while parked in my assigned parking space. The guy who parked in the space next to mine hit the car once pulling out and again when pulling in -- I worked very hard to ensure the cars were properly repaired.

If your M2 can be repaired your #1 job is to ensure it is prepared brought back to its pre collision condition as best as humanly possible. Over time knowing this was done will help ease the pain of remembering what happened to your M2.

Also, take good pics of the car as it is now. Document the damage. Then best you can document the repair process. And save the final paperwork that shows all factory parts were used along with all the other stuff that was done.

This is for when (if) you go to sell the car privately or trade it in you can show the car's damage and the details of the repair.

When I traded in the Scat Pack (for a 2022 BMW 230i) I handed the used car appraiser the pics, copy of the (8 pages) repair invoice. He looked at them briefly then handed them back. I said they were his to put in the car's file. He declined to keep them.

He checked out the car and it passed his check out with flying colors. Just 8K miles and in pristine condition with better than factory service history.

The deal was done. Some time after curious I used the Scat Pack's VIN to find the car. I found it still for sale. I read the for sale details of the car and noted the CarFax report did not list the accident. I traded in the Scat Pack about 16 months after the accident and repairs.

You will be at the mercy of the shop doing the repairs, availability of parts, and the biggie...the insurance company of the driver who hit you.

My wife was rear ended at a traffic light in our MY23 M240 and it took just over 60 days for the repairs and fighting with their insurance company (Safeco/Liberty) to make payments.

Well it’s official. The 2023 M2 is totaled and the 2024 M2 begins production in November and should arrive late April or early May. Now I have to go through the process of dealing with the insurance company to make sure I get my down payment back.

Back to the waiting game.

HUGE DUDE!! Glad you got it written off, that was the best case scenario! Curious, are you going to make any changes to your build now that you have a redo?

I love the Toronto Red. I was worried about the orange undertones and not seeing the color on a G87 in person, but once I saw it in person I knew it was the right choice. Not to mention I already have IND painted reflectors, Painted Center Bumper Trim, and some other minor cosmetic mods collecting dust behind my sofa.

I thought about switching to Cognac leather instead of the Black with M color highlight, but ultimately decided against it because there’s a lot of red, purple (blue), and blue light all over the cabin, and especially at night and it matches the seats. That’s the one area that makes me wish I could just look past the G82’s face. It has some kick ass interior choices and it has grown on me a little, but I actually love everything about the G87. I'm going to keep car for a long time if teen drivers will allow it
