First of all, Merry Christmas everyone.

Now, I was in a drive thru earlier today and since it’s Christmas, they were short staffed and the line took me like 30 minutes to get to the window to pay and take my food. Start Stop wasn’t cooperating so I would just turn off my car until the line decided to move up, since it says I shouldn’t idle for long periods of time during break in. The line moved up so I started my car (engine was warm) and put it into gear like within a second or two. I’m wondering if this is bad to do for the car, not sure how fast oil pressure builds up but since it was warm, shouldn’t I be fine? I doubt this one incident will cause any issues but I’m wondering if it’s something that usually shouldn’t be done.

Sorry for the dumb question

Even if the engine is warm it'll still do a cold start, recommend you wait until the RPMs settle down before putting it into gear. But even then, it's not an issue. Car was already warm and hot oil flows easily. You were also in a drive thru and not trying to overtake someone on the freeway. Your car is fine, nothing to worry about. Merry Christmas!

It didn’t do a cold start, it started and the idle was at the lowest possible RPM

Interesting, I don't have a G87 (yet) but every BMW I've owned has always done a cold startup even if the engine was only off for a few minutes. Maybe someone else with a G87 can chime in?

BTW, the Start/Stop doesn't really work well in a drive thru because it needs some runway when coming to a stop to turn the engine off which you don't really have when in line. It also won't turn the engine off if the steering wheel is even slightly turned, like in a drive thru.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. My F87 always used to do a cold start though, even if the engine was off for like 30 seconds

Make sure the next owner is aware of this.

My M140 used to do the half minute loud start every time, even fully warmes up. G87 some times does some times doesnt, i feel like it has a mind of its own with these things 😅 putting it in gear right away will be fine. Turning it off 20 times in a queue after 3 seconds, im not sure tbh, hopefully not bad if you not do it every day..

That is the worst you can do to the engine. I'm recommending full tear down of the engine and inspection

Engine was fine. Oil pressure builds pretty darn quick at engine start and along with this sufficient oil flow.

All I do is if after engine start if engine RPMs are elevated above hot idle I wait for RPMs to drop to near hot idle speed before shifting the (manual) transmission into gear and moving off.

(My other car is equipped with an automatic transmission and I wait for RPMs to drop before shifting the transmission from P to D or R.)
