Something about the G87 is enticing
Ok so as some of you are aware I placed an order for an M2 around November. I ended up purchasing an M4 as they told me that due to me speccing the bucket seats, it would delay the build by up to 6 months. Now this isn't a dream car for me and so I didn't want to wait and I ended up buying an M4 Comp x drive in Boston Green. Beautiful car.
However I was at my dealership today for my breakin service and they have an M2 in the showroom. And man I couldn't stop staring at it. I love the body dimensions and I like the size. The M4 is great but it's very very big. The M2 is closer to what I prefer in terms of car size. The body itself is also more unique. Especially the side profile. I feel it stands out more. The M4 from the side honestly looks like a Mustang. Also in terms of power I find the M4 to be almost too much. 503(allegedly) HP in AWD is so much power. I honestly never use all of it. Talking with the dealership, it turns out that my order is still in and that my name is still on the order. So I asked them to keep my name on it. Car is expected to arrive sometime in Q3 of 2024 so that gives me a good amount of time with the M4 to see if it's something I'd rather stay with. Pros of getting the M2: Smaller car More unique styling Bucket seats Mperformance steering wheel installed port side Mperformance HAS kit installed port side Cons of getting the M2: No more BMW individual color, I'd lose the Boston Green with Tartufo interior 100+ HP down No AWD Less usable back seats Roughly same price as I got a massive discount off MSRP for the M4. It's only the same price because I checked every box on the M2 M4 is way comfier as it has the merino leather So yeah. Can't decide right now what I want. I mean granted I'm in a super lucky position to be able to buy an M4 and then still decide if I want a brand new M2 not even a year later. But I'm also considering buying a used 991.2 GT3 in a few years so even if I got the M2 it would only stay with me for another year or so. Anyone come from a G82CX into a G87? Thoughts? |

I'm assuming M2 will be 6MT, because there isn't enough fun factor going for the M2 auto to switch from an M4 comp to an M2 otherwise.
Cabin is pretty tight inside compared to the M4 as well, I live with it only because I have other spacious cars.

Nah I would stick with the ZF8. Unfortunately a medical reason prevents me from daily driving a MT car. Sucks as all my cars have been MT up till 2021.
I also don't mind the smaller size since I do have a Golf R that I can use if need be. |

The M2 is not 100 hp down from an M4 Comp. In fact, if you look at several dynos posted online, the M2 is dynoing around 470 whp. IND dynoed both a M4 Base & M2, and both were almost identical. So considering BMW rates the comp only 30 hp more on the M4, it's safe to say thats about the difference you can expect.
Re: comfort, my wife's X3MC has the full merino leather & my M2 has the vernasca leather. I've driven both on 4-hour plus continuous trips and I think my seats are more comfortable.

1. There's at most a 30 hp difference.
2. If you got an individual M4 at the cost of an M2, I think you made out like a bandit. I would keep the M4.

I got out of my G80 m3 in favor of the M2. no regrets. love it and prefer smaller cars also.
But it's pretty insane to me that you have to wait that long. I'd just scoop a good spec online instead of waiting almost another full year |

It’s funny I found this thread. I’m currently in the opposite situation. My G87 6MT was involved in a bad hit and run. I have a new order in with my CA with no deposit down as a repeated customer. This time I’m opting for CF buckets, however as you said they are extremely back ordered. This thing wouldn’t start production until March/April.
Unfortunately, there’s no CF buckets paired with a 6MT in transit or in the bank that aren’t accounted for. I’d be lucky to get this thing by Q3 at this point. My other thought process was slipping into a nice G82 x-drive. I’m a huge manual trans fan, but I’d much prefer a competition over a 6MT M4. It looks big but man those things are sweet… I’m able to get a massive discount on a fully loaded G82 x-drive with carbon buckets. But do I want to really do that? I’ve heard mixed reviews on the ZF8 (as there is on the manual also) but I’m just not sure what to do. We can always wait for a 2025 G87 with new colors! Although who waits these days |

Is it true the G87 can’t be optioned with surround view parking cameras like the G80/G82?

I wouldn’t bother getting a M2 in your situation. They aren’t going to feel that different from each other - it’s the same drive train with very similar suspension and just shorter wheelbase. Plus, even at 450hp it’s still way too much for the road. If you want a car that you can really push on the road, you’re going to have to get a Miata or a BRZ.
Lastly, if you’re thinking of getting a GT3, forget the M2 and just put that money towards it instead. |

Yeah this has kinda been on my mind as well. However an M2 as the daily and a GT3 as the weekend car feels like it would be the ultimate combo. |

Dyno numbers will differ, but my experience of driving the M4C xDrive and M2 auto on the same track in convoy with both cars and an M3CS all within 30 mins of each other is that the M2 and M4C have no significant difference in acceleration in the 80 to 200km/h range on the same straight, only the M3CS is a bit quicker than both.

I have both. In my case my M4 is a convertible comp xdrive and M2 a MT. I LOVE the M2, it's so much freaking fun and for the price there isn't anything close. But my love is deeply connected with it being a MT in the smaller chassis. If they were both Autos... I am not sure it would be as compelling of a change.
For me what makes the M2 so much fun is driver engagement of rowing the gears in a slightly smaller car. It feels like more of an affair. The M4 feels more GT in comparison. They are both comfy and somehow I have more shoulder room in the M2. The M4 interior is nicer if you go full leather, but if you don't they feel basically the same. I say keep the M4 since you would be getting an auto, and just Prep for the Porsche. |
