Tools found in engine bay
Not sure what to make of this
M2 competition 2019 model 27k miles As far as im aware its only been to BMW dealers Im the second owner I just opened up the bonnet and found a torqx extension socket sitting in front of the carbon strut brace It's been about 1k miles since it went last to a BMW dealer, and i've done a few spirited drives since then. The tool is definitely not mine ! Should i be worried |

Was it used to open the air filter box at some time?

I heard a story one time about a guy that climbed all the way to the top of a military ship to work on the antenna... when he realized back on the dock in his work truck was the wrench he needed a half hour to get down and walk to truck....
When looking near the spot he needed to unbolt he noticed at some other port the last guy had left his wrench still on one of the bolts... like what are the odds... and it still being there. |

Worried about what? The last person who worked on your car forgot their tool there, simple as that. Also, not sure what you expect of a car but it's not because someone worked on it that it's not a "clean" car.

It’s amazing it still in there
I mean I’ve been on some very spirited drives I guess I’m slightly worried as the things it seems to fit are the bracing, access to the radiator etc. I’m probably overthinking it |

I agree. Not as bad as a doctor leaving a hemostat in your abdomen.

Exactly, add it to your own tool collection. If there were fasteners rolling around then I would be concerned.

Better situation than the dealer leaving your o2 sensors unplugged after spark plug service 🙃

I'm thinking you should be enjoying your new-found treasure. I'm sure the mechanic already has a replacement in his toolkit.

It happens more often than you think.
I found a small flashlight in the ECU box of my Z4 Literally like this: ![]() I think its a flashlight from the agency that checks the shops that do the annual MOT test in Germany. Who knows how long it had been sitting there. The car was 6 years old when I got it.

I've not yet found tools in the engine bay, but I've driven home after getting tyres and found the head of the jack still wedged onto a jacking point. Also bought a new set of sockets etc, opened the cellophane wrapping and found there was a used 5mm socket from a totally different tool brand inside the set. ![]() |

I dont know if any damage has been done i hope not
it was pretty near the carbon strut brace, i hope its not scratched up i'll have a good look at the weekend Would i rather have a tool worth a few bucks Or it left loose in my engine bay for who knows how long? My car is worth quite a bit of money, i think it is careless to be honest if i knew who'd left in there i would let them know what i think its not a win anyway in future when i collect my car from a dearler first thing i'll do is pop the bonnet, check for tools they have gifted me lesson learnt Last edited by timchump; 02-06-2024 at 06:37 AM.. |
