Question: The BMW recommended oil change interval for my 2022 M240i is 10,000 miles, which is close to my annual mileage, so one change every 12 months or 10,000 miles for me. My research tells me that perhaps in Texas I should consider oil changes every 5,000k, and currently my car shows 15,000, so maybe I should do an oil change now? Please comment on whether I should move to a 5,000k interval regularly or go with the BMW recommended 10,000k.

FYI... I like this car so much that I'm hoping to keep it for 10 years or more. All commentary on this question/issue would be appreciated.

10 years or more? For sure go with 5k. Cheap price to pay with a peace of mind.
I’d do 5k but don’t reset monitor so dealer does it for you for free at 10k

All you are doing with additional oil changes is paying for peace of mind.
Modern oils in modern engines will have no problem over 10k miles per year in normal operating conditions.

It’s worth doing it every 5K, especially for those that can do their own oil changes. A liqui moly change kit is around $75-$90 shipped from fcp euro

There is a reason that almost every current BMW engine made is having bearing problems. You can just change the oil at 5 and don’t bother with the filter. They are good for way past 10k miles. Or do everything at 7.5k

I change oil every ~3,500 miles. On a rare occasion it may go in the 4,000 - 5,000 range but definitely dont go past 5,000.

It can be well found that changing oil between 7,500 - 10,000 miles but I am old school. You are caring for your motor. If you let your car sit for winter months, treat it as a timeframe when you would have driven the miles (oil that sits needs to be changed, too).

The short response is: Well, no secret I'm an advocate of more frequent oil/filter services and I would recommend 5K mile oil/filter services in your case.

Change the oil/filter at 5K miles but do not treat this as a condition based service (CBS). Ask that the CBS system not be reset. 'course you will have to pay out of pocket for this between CBS services service.

Then when the CBS alerts that an oil/filter service is due have it done. And have the CBS reset.

The long response is....

Over the years I have put 150K miles on several vehicles: '96 Mustang GT, 2002 VW Golf TDi, and a 2003 Porsche 996 Turbo; and 317K miles on my 2002 Boxster and all received more frequent than called for by the factory oil/filter (and other) services.

No engine problems. Oil consumption <1quart in 5K miles.

This more frequent oil/filter servicing is going to continue with my M2 and 230xi.

In fact just got an alert my M2 is due for a condition based service (CBS) in 4200 miles or by April 2024. (I bought the M2 last April 14.) At the time of the alert the car had 6800 miles. Just had it in for an oil/filter service at 5K miles but I did not have the CBS reset.

But the car is booked in for a CBS service March 19.

I will add there can be vehicle usage for which that 10K mile oil/filter servicing could be ok...

Up until 2017 I road tripped my cars and often. This involved a week's vacation during which I'd drive 4K to 5K miles. All highway miles.

As was my habit I'd arrange to leave with fresh oil in the engine. Upon returning home and then as the odometer rolled to 5K miles I'd change the oil.

Upon observing the draining oil I'd notice it still had a bit of amber color to it and was translucent. This in rather stark contrast to the usual appearance of the oil after 5K miles of my more normal usage. This oil would drain out black as anything. And certainly with no translucence.

From the appearance of the oil after 5K miles of highway driving it was clear to me that if my usage involved that kind of driving the oil would be ok to run 6K, 7500, possibly even 10K miles.

But even though the majority of my usage involved 60 miles per day work commute with a considerable number of miles on the freeway there was enough city/surface street driving that apparently negated the freeway usage. By 5K miles I had signs the oil was due to be changed. One was the engine was noticeably noisier at idle. More ticky. More so than normal. And a bit of oil smoke upon cold start would occur which was unknown when the oil was fresher, had fewer miles on it.

I had my first free oil change recently seems the car tells you yearly or 10k whichever comes first mine told me to get it done at 5k which was basically the 1 year mark of owning the car. I don't think you need to change every 3k but if you are a tad harder on the car 5k would feel safer than say 10k. If you really want to know though send a sample to Blackstone for analysis. They def take the guess work out of it.

I appreciate the comments regarding my Question above, and since I intend to keep the car for many years to come, I figure that a $100 oil change every 5,000 miles is likely going to pay off in the long run... Definitely can't hurt.

In my opinion based on a bunch of analysis reports etc. A high performance synthetic oil should have no problem reaching 7500 mi before beginning to degrade to a point well outside the initial specs. So to change it every 5k-7500 would be my go to ensure you always have your oil operating at its advertised performance. Anything more frequent would depend on how hard you've been driving, my 5k-7500 is for "daily driver" if you track the car that's a whole other thing.
