Not that fast?
I've had the car since December and don't get to drive it too much, I have a very short commute to work and my family life doesn't allow too much free time to run away to the local canyon for hours on Sundays. I managed to get up to my local canyon this week and put it to its paces, but the car just doesn't feel that fast, am I crazy? It's a manual, and I'm not better than any new automatic, so there is that, but after the loaner i4 I had recently (when the M2 was in for it's 1200 mile service), I just am not really impressed. It has good brakes and pretty good traction, but the acceleration isn't that great, you have to rev it all the way out and even then it doesn't pin you to your seat.

So.....no test drive? Define 'fast'. Do you live your 'life' a 1/4 mile at a time. No one likes the tuna. The 'buster' brought me back!

You are correct the car does not give you that push you in your seat acceleration like other turbo cars. The tuning on the g87 at least manual (haven’t driven AT) is completely different than g80 and feels more NA. That being said if you look down the car is MOVING

Yup, the car is fast but doesn't feel that fast. My C7 Corvette feels like it's pulling much harder and faster but they are about the same if you use a stop watch.

I haven't driven a manual M2, but my auto puts you back in the seat when you really hit it. I will say the power delivery is pretty smooth & the car is quiet, so you don't realize how fast you're going. Very often I'll switch lanes on the freeway to pass and see triple digits in the HUD in no time.
Conversely, my supercharged C6 Z06 is loud, closer to the ground, and about 8-900 lbs lighter, so totally different driving experience. |

It’s fast. trapping close to 120 is fast. It just doesn’t feel that fast because of the NA like tune, long gearing and how insulated and put together the car is. My 450 whp STi feels much faster because of gearing, turbo spool, etc, It might actually be faster because it’s lighter. Not sure

Speaking only to the 8AT, it does show you its power. You first, need to be in sport or sport+ mode. Second, keep in mind the way it was tuned from the factory how/where the power band is set up. It maxes at higher rpms...so yes, you need to put your foot in it. If you are custom tuning it and able to change that, you will see a whole new world of hurt it can do. Even without touching the trans, its a beast on a stage 2 tune for 93 octane. |

context is king here.. i guess if you are coming from a Hellcat or C7 Z06 it might not feel that fast to you, or if you live in Iowa and have nothing but straight road ahead? Dunno man. Think you need to drive something from pre-2010 and reset your butt dyno

I have the ZF8, and most times I drive it, I think "fuck this is fast". You may have a different car history, maybe you've had some scary fast cars in the past, but this thing moves. Only other thing I can think of (aside from a sick car) is maybe TC is pulling power for some reason.

I’ve owned dozens of cars (some classic some muscle) over 5 decades. Until the G87, our M240i was the fastest of them.
The stock G87, to me, is a beast and I can’t imagine a Stage 2 tune. Certainly not for the faint of heart. |

instant torque (like EV) doesn't mean fast

We've all been conditioned over the years to expect a massive chunk of torque way down low since the introduction of Direct Injection on turbo vehicles. From all manus. Myself included.
My first few G87 test drives, I was like "huh". Then I test drove another used one past the break-in mileage and wrapped it out to redline in 2nd and 3rd, slam-shifting, and 'bout shit ma pants. Problem for me is this will be a 90% commuter on crowded roads, so I will rarely get the opportunity to use the powerband. Kind of sucks, honestly. Kinda wish there was a B58 6MT M2 option. Cannot stand the M240s and no MT.

our human body feel more jolt with a sudden push than linear power delivery from an engine. So my old wrx feels fast because of sudden surge of speed when turbo spool up, but really it wasn't that fast.
In that respect, EV with instant torque will satisfy people who are looking for that surge. And that is pretty fun from time to time, especial when you need to pass that jackass on the road. EV is king for that. And that's the definition for "Fast" for some people, it's more about the feeling. For others, they don't need to feel the jolt, they just know. They look at lap time, top speed, etc and etc to know they are in a fast car, and enjoy driving such a car. I think a great sport car is a car that make speed feel slow because you have some much control with the car, so that you can take that corner at a much higher speed than you normally would. The car tells you that you are in complete control. This high capability is also a curse sometimes because it may feel dull and lack excitement at low speed. So I realize that I will need to have both type of car to keep me happy , Tesla + M2 is my solution. |
