Oil cooler guards

Taking delivery of a new G87 M2, therefore I’d to know if 3rd party oil cooler guards are required.

I’m not able to track the car due to restrictions imposed by the finance company, so feel that oil cooler guards might be a tad overkill.

I’ve read that the radiator grill mesh kits are a necessity due to how exposed the front end is and to protect from leaves, stone chips, but what about oil cooler guards?

They make a part that goes underneath the car to protect the oil cooler.

its the first thing i (and many others) did to the car. i did oil cooler plus all the forward facing cooling components-its your money but well worth the outlay IMO. here are two threads worth reading start to finish.

I appreciate the feedback and will follow the advice, but playing devils advocate, whe purchasing a brand new G87 M2 with warranty, surely any damage would be covered or am I delusional?

Delusional. BMW would consider it like a rock taking out your windshield. Except this takes out your entire engine.

I can't say for sure but I don't think road debris is covered by warranty. I don't remember who but I think someone here had to pay because a rock hit his.

Call your insurer but the idiotic design of no protection is a design flaw and not a warranty issue. You would file a insurer claim to replace your motor if the cooler is damaged and all the oil drains out, assuming you could not shut the motor down in time.

It’s fair to say spending a couple hundred pounds will save some serious headaches.

If i recall correctly another member on here had his oil cooler pierced by some road debris which completely ruined the motor and had to a file a collision insurance claim for coverage.

I should also share that stuff can happen on the roads. Was going about 35 miles per hour and heard a clunk sound. I did not see anything on the road surface and I always drive very cautiously looking out for debris. This piece pierced the undergaurd on the car and was about an inch away from destroying my brake lines. Very close call.

You are correct. BMW did not cover the damage under warranty. Felt bad for the owner as had just purchased the car and was driving back to his home state after purchase. Can you imagine the awful luck…waiting so long to get the car, finally get, then driving home the engine goes because of road debris.

Thumbs up Zunsport 5 Piece Set

You can order Zunsport stainless steel cooler guards from Mach V Motorsports in Sterling, Virginia. Cost is $429 for the 5 piece set.
They try to keep most guards in stock so you don't have to order from the Co. in England. IF they are out then they will ship directly from England to your door. I've searched many different makers of "guards" and I feel these are overall the better ones. That's all that they make and that is these high quality stainless guards for different cars.

I'll be ordering mine soon. My M2 has been built and awaiting trip to the port.

There are many oil cooler puncture horror stories on the G8x forums. Basically, your engine may be toast in seconds and BMW won't cover it. It really makes no sense BMW left the cooler totally exposed.

I got the Zunsport guard. The install is easy and it gives peace of mind for a low cost. It might not be as robust as the Mishimoto guard and others, but my thought process is that if an object is going to get past the Zunsport guard, then I probably have bigger problems to worry about.

Thanks for the feedback, I’m definitely doing the guards.

Zunsport guards

I received the 5 pc set made by Zunsport and ordered through Mach V Motorsports. Quality is very good, and I believe their build strength, being stainless steel will be more than enough to protect.

I've since decided I might as well get the eng. oil cooler guard by Zunsport. But, I discovered that Mach V Motorsports doesn't show them as available through their site. So, I placed the order directly to Zunsport in England. Cost should end up under $200.

Yes, I know to some out there the 5 piece set at $440 plus the extra one I just bought comes out to be on the expensive side, but, the fitment that I've seen...don't have my car yet, in transit......but up against others I've seen, I think they are worth the relaxed comfort I will feel as I put the miles on. Besides, what's the cost of a blown out radiator or other cooler?? More than these guards! I will breathe easier once they are on. As we all know the greatly exposed coolers, radiators, etc, are beyond acceptable and must be protected by whatever the owner chooses to use. BMW...what were you honestly thinking??.....Oh, I see...YOU WEREN'T!!! Brains were locked in to getting the max cooling and that narrow thinking didn't expand to the consequences that SHOULD have been common sense...and you don't have to be a design engineer to foresee the issues of such open exposure!
