Trade in ‘17 Camaro SS for M2 or keep (And still buy M2)?

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker, just wanted some of you guys thoughts on my situation and wondering if other have been in the same predicament:

I currently own a 17 Camaro SS 6MT with mag ride, only 40k miles and paid off. I bought it 7 years ago as an alternative to an F32 M4. Back when I bought the Camaro I wanted an M4 but could not justify the cost as I was saving to buy a house.

Fast forward to today, I bought a house, paid off the Camaro and own an 23 Tesla MYP which is also paid off.

I love my Camaro, the way it handles, the way it shifts, the sound and the power. But I’ve always lusted after an M Car. Which brings me to an M2. I’m looking at placing an order for an Automatic but I’m stuck at whether or not I should trade my Camaro in or keep her when I buy the M2. I’m afraid I’ll miss having a Manual transmission vehicle if I get rid of it, but I also worry I might not drive the Camaro enough to justify keeping it around when I buy the M2.

The debate for me is not a financial one, but a practical one.. I don’t need three cars, but the Camaro holds a certain sentimental value for me…or maybe the M2 will totally replace the desire to keep my Camaro around.. who knows?

What do you guys think?

Glad you guys chimed in about trying a manual M2. I did test drive the M2 in both manual and automatic, and I actually prefer the shifter and clutch pedal feel of the Camaro 6MT over the M2 6MT!

its paid off man. unless you got cash burning a hole in your pocket IMHO i would stick with the camaro for now. G87 will be in production until 2029 so you have time. its an awesome car and i love mine- will be a worthy replacement when the time is right.

If you have the space and resources (which it sounds like you do) just buy it and keep both. You can decide later on you don't like having two pretty similar styles of car, and sell one later on. You don't seem to be the type of person where losing $10k due to a bit of indecision will keep you up at night.

That being said, they also aren't going anywhere.. especially if you want an automatic. If you're not dying to scratch this M2 itch of yours then I would wait a couple of years and see what they do in a refresh, like add xdrive or whatever they would add to screw over early adopters

I have a 2010 Camaro 6MT, and some other vehicles, and I am keeping everything, along with the G87 (which has not arrived yet). I really like cars, and I love driving them, modifying them, and sometimes racing them. I put lots of work and effort into that Camaro and I am just really happy with how that project turned out. I know it has lots of limitations, but I love that car anyway. Besides, your Camaro, and mine, are never coming back. You will never find another car like that one. I would keep it.

I traded a 2018 Camaro 2SS 1LE for a 2021 F87 M2C. Both manuals. I don't regret the decision at all, but I still miss the 1LE. If money was no object and I had the garage space, would have loved to keep the 1LE. In reality though, it didn't make sense.

The M2C is the far superior daily driver. Easier to get in and out of. Visibility is a major plus for the BMW. The BMW is much more under the radar too, at least in Alpine White.

The 1LE felt more like a race car. You sit lower, and it's louder inside and out. It's more raw and visceral - the shifter feels more precise and mechanical, and there's more steering feedback. In comparison, the M2C feels more refined and insulated.

Tbh, you won't really want to drive the Camaro much, if at all, after getting the M2. I have a '11 Callaway supercharged Carbon Edition Z06, which is an absolutely awesome car. Since Nov 28th (when I picked up the M2), the M2 has 9k mi & the Z06 has seen about 350. The M2 is very fun to drive, easier to get in & out of than the Vette, and because the Z is so rare (1 of 3), I do worry about potential damage.

If my Z weren't so special, I would've traded it. My vote is to trade the Camaro.

I had a '17 SS with mag ride. The M2 drives very similar in the way it rides and handles. The suspension soaks up bumps almost identically in both cars, that is to say; very good. M2 feels slightly sharper and more nimble. Power wise, the LT1 rips but the M2 feels noticeably faster in the upper RPMs. Interior is nicer in the BMW, although I like the simple gauges and controls in the Camaro. Camaro sounds way, way better.(I had the active exhaust) The S58 isn't bad after adding a mid pipe, but the Camaro was glorious in Track mode. M2 is more livable, feels like a normal car upfront as far as space and visibility, more space in the rear seat and the truck is not only bigger but more usable compared to the Camaro with its small opening. That being said, if I had a Camaro and a daily I would't spend the $70k I don't think it's that much better than a paid off Camaro.

I have a a similar dilemma with my highly modified 2020 Subaru STi. I planned to get rid of it when I got my manual g87 but I have a connection to the Subbies as I’ve had 3 over the last 15 years. The shifter and hydraulic steering on the STi is MUCH better than the M2 and it’s probably faster but the M is better in every other way, fit and finish, interior, S58 tuning potential….. I also have a manual Bronco so ALL Manuals! For now, I’m keeping all 3 and debating whether to sell the STi or Bronco.

I say get a manual M2 and keep both for a while and see how you feel

I've had 2 new STi's. The M2 6MT will severely disappoint compared to the STI 6MT, as you probably already know. Triple-cone synchros on the 2 gear making 1 -> 2 slam shifts easy as butter. My 2005 STI was raw, mechanical goodness. And they did next to nothing to improve it in the next 18 years. I've had 11 Subarus total, including some WRXs. They literally have nothing to offer me now. Did the STI thing - essentially unchanged from 2004. New WRX got completely ruined with the awful black protuding bumper and black plastic cladding all over it. Which is why I'm looking at $72k Bimmers again.

Yeah i was in the same boat, I had a bunch of STi's and just sold my 19 STi for the 23 M2. I would have loved to stay with the STi if they would have continued and improved the STi. But here i am now with the M2 and I am not disappointed at all... Miss the AWD though

I'm really struggling with the transmission choice. I'm seriously leaning ZF8 at this point. Which is crazy for me. S58 is all mid to top-end power and those 1 & 2 gears are pretty long, which equals a lackluster commuting experience compared to all of my previous MT cars. As much as I hated the 6MT in my old 135i, it had a bunch of low-end torque (especially catless tuned) and shorter gears than the G87 which meant a lot of fun at slower speeds on the street.
The ZF8 would allow me a lot more use of the S58 for 80% of MY uses.
Question remains - will I be bored out of my mind with an auto?

If I were in your shoes, I would simply buy a manual M2. It's such a nice car that is so much fun to drive. I guarantee you that you wouldn't be driving the Camaro afterwards. Add a midpipe to wake the car up a bit and you'll be golden. The car is an absolute blast. Trade the Camaro in to lower the payments or hell, sell it privately and use the money to mod the G87.
Look at this thing, don't deprive yourself lol

Keep the STI!! All I've heard anyone say is that they regret selling theirs.

Funny, similar story into how I ended up with an M2. I was just about to buy a mint '05 STI with ~60k miles for like $27k but the guy backed out at the last minute to sell it to his buddy... but I couldn't shake the itch and here I am a year an a half later with a M2 lol

I had a lightly tuned STI that I sold in 2017. If you could still buy a new STI today I probably wouldn’t have M2.

Funny we're all looking at M2s and not Supras. I went down that route and kept running into dead ends (including stupid Toyota ADMs and no test drives ("We know what we got, pleeb scum.") attitudes.

I even got full spousal approval to buy a 2-seater, yet here I am.

I briefly considered the Supra, but in addition to those issues you mentioned we have a dog that needs some room.

so many people in this boat.. really sucks that brands simply are not listening to enthusiast customers. or they simply try to extract every red cent from you they can (looking at you Nissan, Honda, and Toyota)
