To address the issues arising from the exposed engine oil cooler, ARMASPEED would like to introduce the BMW G8X M2 / M3 / M4 ARMASPEED Aluminum Alloy Oil Cooler Protective Plate. Installation takes just 15 minutes, and it's a simple bolt-on process that doesn't require the removal of any parts, maintaining the integrity of the entire vehicle! Can you go into more detail about how this product enhances airflow / cooling?

Interesting device. Appears to not hang down as low as others and is protective. What testing was done etc and what temp variance was observed. Hope to hear back about this. I have the Zunsport but others near me do not and might find this interesting!

With only about 20% of the exit area and a 90 degree turn in the airflow in a short distance, it would be interesting to see the instrumented test results for this unit vs the original un-shrouded cooler vs a flat plate blocking the cooler exit, when the engine is run hard on a track.

My immediate thought when I see this is that it is too restrictive on air flow.

This one looks like it actually has the quality to go with the price, unlike the other popular option.

Because I see no airflow science (yet) imagine an engine problem, the bmw service manager comes over with it up on the lift, sees that thing and says “nope”

Does $320 for a slab of metal sheet sound better?

I think this is as good as just blocking off bottom cooler lol

I interpreted what you said as comparing this to its actual competitor: the Mishimoto skid plate. And the Mishimoto is a good quality piece and the price makes more sense.

This one is installed over the plastic… weird.
Yes, that appears to be the most popular one. It would be a fine product for around $50. IMO the only ones that can justify their prices are the full metal ones like this or the Mishimoto. I would have no qualms about spending the $460 for the Mishimoto skid plate.

You're making this assertion which should mean you've done some level of analysis on cooling performance with/without the shield.

My question is why haven't you provided that data in this thread or the product page?

Because there’s no way any product would be able to enhance air flow and efficiency compared to nothing at all! At best it may not be worse than nothing at all

In all cases the material cost of the metal protection plates/grilles whether aluminium or stainless steel, is less than $10.

Complaining about $172 vs $500 for a big hunk of metal that restricts airflow more than the $172 piece.

I'd be very rich man if I paid the material costs for everything I purchased. Sometimes I lay in bed at night wishing that were so....

OP (Armaspeed) hasn't logged in since they posted this thread. I've even PM'd them for more info, and nothing. Not a great way to advertise your products to an active community.

Armaspeed replied to my PM last night:

"Thank you for your interest in our product! We claim enhanced cooling efficiency because we have meticulously designed the lines, angles, and even the shapes of the holes in this product from a more refined and fluid dynamics perspective to achieve this effect."

I have asked for some testing data. I mean they've gotta have some white paper on their fluid dynamics research, right? Come on Armaspeed, show us the receipts!

So I guess they completely re-designed the old louver punch that you see on some hot rod hoods.

Oh wait, no they didn't.

Fluid dynamics my ass

There is about $10 in aluminum, 1 hour of labor or shape/punch and then paint. So $200 seems reasonable. Too bad it will restrict air flow and will just leave any buyer in a bad warranty position.

When I had mine in for its 1-year service, the SA mentioned that they liked my Mishimoto plate, seemed to them to be a good solution although they hadn't seen many damaged coolers. Hadn't seen many - that's encouraging - lol. Maybe if they had seen none ...

In a past life I to worked at a metal factory, we operated an almost identical stamp/tool to this skid plate, it was used on various light to heavy machinery that needs to vent/cool, an example of this is on older outdoor generators, like Honda's engine cowls/covers, except they'd be oriented vertically.
I've even seen these punched into a high school, high school, confidential, lockers.
