Lighter wheels

Did going to lighter wheels really make a difference in how the car felt/handled?

Easier acceleration and quicker braking as expected from less unsprung / rotational weight. Quicker in and out if corners.

I dropped close to 24 lbs by switching to 825M wheels, and another 38 by switching to a lithium battery, and noticed a difference immediately.

AI is telling me every pound of rotational mass cut off is equal to 8.4lbs of static. So 20lb wheel savings = 168lbs! That’s almost the weight of an adult passenger!

Day to day you won’t feel much difference

But high speeds, canyon carving, or track days = Yes

I’d stick with OEM forged , the 827M in Gold look amazing on the M2

Such an assertively accurate answer which without context is about as accurate as asking a sack of potatoes the same question. Typical "AI" answer that is making the world as a whole dumber by creating inaccurate info from unknown sources that people take to be the definitive answer.

OP: in my experience, you can definitely feel the car feeling a little more agile when maneuvering/off the line. My experience is a bit limited: I’ve had winter sets that were vastly lighter in a different car, and the difference is felt immediately, but you forget it the next day (until you put the other ones one season after season).

With the M2, the same with the winter set, it’s a little lighter, and I can feel it, but it’s something I forget about.

If I were to explain it to anyone it’d be like saying “you get an additional 10hp only in first gear”. You feel it a little more agile at first, then it’s the same, and you forget your car had 10 less horsepower in a day, as you get used to it very quickly.

But then again, I haven’t experience losing 20-30 pounds with different wheels in the M2 with the same performance tires to compare. Maybe one day
Living / working in the MS world there are practical applications for Copilot, but it is still early in the life cycle. Paired with Teams Premium definitely has some great features. But you could also say I drink the Kool aid lol.

I would say AI as a whole is still in very early in maturity. Definitely has potential for the future though.

Back to the OP topic, I would add the fact that the lighter wheels also reduce parasitic HP loss. So while you're not making any additional HP, you are able to put more down to the wheels due to less loss. Is this dramatic? No but still enough to make some difference.

How did you save 44lbs switching to the 825m wheel? They are only 4-5lbs lighter per wheel.

Typo, meant 24 lbs. Take a look at my post in the wheel section with weight measurements. Here are the basics. First two the cast 930s, 2nd two the forged 825m.

I changed my boat anchor 930M to Apex VS-5RS and saved roughly 40 lbs. Honestly, I don't think I felt the changes immediately, however I do feel like my car has gotten stronger. I don't know if this is due to the weight loss of the wheels and the exhaust (Evolution Racewerks - it's absolutely amazing BTW), but I do feel that the car performs better now than it did new.
Honestly, tires make a huge difference in road feel. For example, on my GTI, I run Blizzaks in the winter, on aftermarket wheels, now that you can feel immediately compared to the stock tires.

Lighter wheels being noticeably different is the most overblown myth in passenger cars. If the heavier 930M impacted the performance of the car or the ride quality significantly you would see it in the numbers vs the G8x M3/M4. In fact, some people believe the M2 rides better. I also noticed zero subjective difference in winter vs summer wheel sets on my F87 comp.

I notice everything in a car like how differently it feels when driving with a passenger and without. Same with lighter wheels, I can instantly sense the difference in a big way. Not everyone is so discerning which is why this topic tends to be subjective.

I noticed a major difference with apex wheels on my G42, but that was also all seasons run flats vs PS4S and with x drive grip was not really a limiting factor.
