Delayed throttle response on cold start

Wondering if anyone has experienced this issue. When I start the car, if I don't wait for the engine to throttle down the throttle response is very slow (like a second or two).

This has caused some "exciting" times leaving a parking space/garage where I give it throttle, nothing happens, I give it some more and suddenly the engine revs up to like 3500 rpm.

I usually let it throttle down anyway but it seems like a bit of a safety issue.

The wastegates are held open for a short period on cold start to warm the cats as quickly as possible. You won’t get any initial boost until they close and anything more than a small amount of throttle will try to create boost, then you may get more boost than expected as they shut. From an engine longevity perspective, it isn’t a good idea to be using any amount of boost until the engine has warmed up somewhat.

There's a thread regarding this in the M340i section. It's happened to me multiple times, but it's random which makes it difficult to reproduce for BMW to figure out.

Similar to how you describe it. It happens randomly when accelerating from a stop. The light goes green. I press gas. Car doesn't move much, so I press gas harder, and after 1-2 seconds it just rockets forward.

With one notable exception my SOP is to after a cold start allow the engine enough idle time for the elevated cold idle RPMs to drop. After the RPMs drop the engine's throttle response is fine.

But with another car I found to avoid a CEL -- due to misfires which were not plug or coil related -- tech thought they might be due to lazy injectors but advised a wait and see course of action -- pretty soon after cold start I was backing the car out of the carport.

But before I did this I gave the gas pedal a bit of a blip or two which dropped RPMs and the engine throttle response was fine. Oh, the engine was turbo-charged, in fact was fitted with 2 of them...

With my M2 (and 230ix) I just let the engine idle until RPMs drop. Takes nearly no time. And the engine/throttle behavior is normal.

Agree. I see no reason to start the car & immediately take off. It takes just a few seconds for the idle to come down. When it does I just take my foot off the brake & the car starts moving. Then I engage the throttle.
