Why don’t people spray paint their stock G87 exhaust like the F87 owners did?

This was like the day-one mod during F87 times.
Now, I very rarely see blacked out stock cow udders.
Is the stock muffler less visible/obnoxious on the G87 than it was on the F87?

I still think it should be done…

"Cow udder" - holy crap that made me laugh. It is the only reason I am doing an axle-back exhaust. That huge muffler is just so unnecessary. We didn't get the buck-tooth grille, but we got the "cow udder" muffler.

I am laughing again. LOL

I have yet to understand this fascination with blacking out cars like you fight crime at night.

He's only talking about painting the muffler. It is way too obvious/visible & downright ugly/unnecessary on our cars. I wouldn't paint mine, but definitely will swap out for an axle-back with a smaller, less visible muffler.

I'll get an extended diffuser to hide mine.

Oh I knew what he was referring to, still feels unnecessary to go to those lengths but I’m a simple fellow. I can appreciate the attention to detail, though.

Am I right though? Seemed like 90% of the F87 owners did this. Driveway rattle-can jobs or full removals, some gloss, some flat, some primered before, some not. Generally a high-temp BBQ grille paint or some such.

I’m think when I cut my exhaust for the midpipe install, I may yank the udder off and spray it then, off the car. PITA, but the car won’t be in a better position than that. Also, beats having to mask all up under the car and around the bumper etc.

Anybody have any paint recommendations?

Honestly, I don't think you can do much better than Krylon or Rust-o-leum. Their high temp paint does what it says. One of those, why pay more if you don't have to things. I'd do matte though, I think it will make it less obvious if that's what you're going for. Light scuff with a fine sandpaper & you should be AOK.

Gloss, probably means more prep to get a nice surface & ensure everything sticks well & lays nicely.

Funny, I did this on both my F87s but haven’t given it much thought on the G. Maybe because I’m planning an exhaust either way.

You're creating more work for yourself removing the entire muffle. It takes less time masking it than removing and reinstalling the muffler. You only need to paint a small amount that's visible at the bottom, not the entire thing. F87 guys used disposable gloves to quickly cover the exhaust tips. Any high heat paint will do the job. What's more important is prepping the surface by scuffing it with Red Scotch Brite to give the paint something to adhere to and then hit it with digresser to fully clean it before painting.

I only notice it at a distance say walking back while at a car event for example and it does seem unfinished but not a deal breaker for me . The Diffuser idea would be nice although very expensive likley for its purpose.

here I thought I was being picky...getting a can of spray sounds like a good idea. I'm 400 miles from out of breakin.

If anyone ends up doing this post pictures please, I’m curious how it would look now.

It really should have been black as stock, or at least as part of the shadowline option.

I feel like it’s an interesting design element. A lot of manufacturers try to completely hide the fact there is an exhaust. M2 is definitely not an EV.

Here you go. Easy job.
I removed the plastic bumper cover which made it even easier. Taped it up. Light sand, primed and used flame proof paint (see attached - same brand primer). Sprayed the entire coffin exhaust.
Very satisfying results. Looks much better to my eye.

It was the sole reason I got the axle back exhaust on the f87. I don't feel like it sticks out as far on the G87 so I haven't bothered with it.

Also, the f87 axle back was way cheaper. Not sure why it shot up so much on the g87.
