Hey everyone - so unfortunately my MK8 Golf R 6MT was recently totaled. I had been pairing that with my Model 3 Performance as my DD and I'm now looking for a replacement. Highly prefer 6MT, but would consider other options if they are really special (see below). Only must have is a back seat, as I have two little ones that like to jump in and take a ride.

I think I have it narrowed to the following three cars but would love to hear your opinions:

- M2 6MT (long time BMW owner, so this would be familiar territory)

- Giulia Quad (this would be the AT outlier, but such a special car and last chace to own one new)

- Civic Type R (more of a analog to my Golf R. Most cost effective option)

Also considered:

RS3
CT4V BW
M3

My pick would be M2 / M3 or Civic Type R. Any of these cars will give you the fun factor of a 6MT to pair with the Model 3. I will say that the manual transmission on the civic type R is superior to the G8X series in my opinion.

You have the luxury of having a DD + weekend car. I would not get a “sporty” car for the weekend, but rather a purpose built sports car. M2 would get my vote from your list. But maybe consider a 911 or a camaro zl1 1le.

I'm a big fan of the Giulia Quads, but just expect it will require more maintenance than some of the others on your list. Only get if you live reasonably close to a dealer.

Legit one of the greatest cars I've ever driven though. The steering alone is addicting.

Sell the Tesla and get a CT4BW. If you were to buy a really good driving car, you will never want to touch the Tesla again, so you may as well get rid of it now.

The smart buy is the CTR or CT4BW. The one I would want is the Giula QF. Those Alfa are just SOOO satisfying to drive

The Tesla isn't going anywhere The new ones are incredible and that's coming from someone who has owned an e46, e92, F80 CS and on and on (should have kept one of them around though, lol)

Totally agree on the Alfa. My heart tells me to go with that, my head says anything else.

agree...if you know you know. Love my M3P -best daily driver I've ever owned considering performance, reliability and the fact it is basically free gas when you have solar and home charging, not to mention basically $0 in maintenance besides tires.


I paired mine with a gen1 gated R8....Highly recomended if you can swing it.
I figure I will most likely make money on it if I ever have to sell it, which hopefully never happens

E9x M3 for a huge contrast in power delivery. 8400 rpm, manual trans. If you want a torque hit instead, buy a turbo 6 car like the M2 or later M3/4. But you have a torque hit car with the EV. Civic R is the boring practical response but if that is your priority, they are great cars and you can then have 2 sporty appliances.

Loved my e92 M3 ZCP. Would have probably kept it forever, but again was unfortunately totaled by a driver that was texting and driving, ugh.

Confused why you would want to pair a weekend sedan with a weekday sedan

I get the desire to have back seats so you can enjoy that time behind the wheel with your kids, definitely sounds like some sort of convertible would fit the bill. E93 M3 would certainly be a hoot and cheap to boot.

My sister and I loved riding with dad in his E36 328i convertible back in the early 2000s

I have to agree and wanted to write much the same. I mean, isn't the point of the Model 3 Performance to have a daily driver that doubles for a weekend track car?

Maybe the OP still has the ICE itch (?).

I've driven a few electrics. While I have a huge distaste for automatics, EVs are satisfying because the flat torque curve and if forced, would choose an EV over an ICEV automatic.

How old are your kids? Would a used 911 for them, or are they too big or small for it?

If you're open to older stuff, the E90 M3 would be sweet, as would a CTSV2, an E39/E60 M5...

I assume you're looking at a $40-50k budget, I'd buy the cleanest E39 or E60 manual incould find with the lowest miles and do that, then when you're ready to move on you'll probably turn a profit.

Not my cup of tea, but I'd bet Tesla thinks so.

An Ariel Atom is my idea of a weekend track car.
