Not sure what to make of this..

Lately there is news about a potential merger between Honda and Nissan which looks rather surprising (not just in the EV *******...Never thought I'd see or hear the day where two historic car (rival?) manufacturers would contemplate this..

https://www.motor1.com/news/745186/g...esperate-move/

I guess no more NSX vs Skylines..

After they split Rolls and Bentley and a Chineese firm bought Jeep, nothing makes sense anymore.

But I do occasionally get to remind some 'Big-3 troglodyte' that BMW is the largest car manufacturer/exporter in North America.

Yea agree Maynard before Honda started making turbo engines, they were infamous for their naturally aspirated, VTEC and motorcycle engineering, which was a part of what made them different from the others.

Working with a competitor like Nissan I don't think will work..The Nissan Renault case is an example..Unless they are going to call their new Civic, the Civic GTR

Better for Nissan than Honda, and I say that as a long-term owner of a QX-56. In fact, Nissan gets to keep functioning, albeit at a much smaller scale. Honda gets technology from the Versa EV, as well as a body-on-frame platform for trucks and SUVs. I'll grant that Nissan's RWD sporty platform (300ZX, Infinity G-series) also has a strong following, but not certain how well they sell these days.

I have owned other Nissans, as well as Toyotas and a Honda. I think Hondas and Toyotas are robust enough to make it well past 200k miles. My Nissans, on the other hand, were lucky enough to make it past 100k miles without major repairs. I am sure there are exceptions out there, but this is my experience over the past three decades.

I'm a fun person at parties where the possible merger of Honda/Nissan isn't a topic for discussion.

You invited yourself to such a party, then complained about being there.

I think this is going into a similar direction as the story about Stellantis in the U.K..

Maybe as you said Hondas are more reliable and offer more than Nissan here..I guess people can take the opportunity to buy a Nissan or a Mitsubishi when the prices drop...

No idea where this particular merger will play out. But, they are no doubt looking at efficiencies based on elimination of redundancies. So they can share the best of each companies engineering across both platforms and theoretically keep the loyal customers of both I the process. At some point the only differentiator will be sheet metal and interior design elements.

With good planning they will keep the best products from each line up. Maybe Nissan gets more reliable and Honda gets some sportier elements (pun intended). An Acura with more oomph might be interesting.

Didn't see any precondition that one must be a Honda/Nissan fan to participate in this thread.

I don't hate Honda.

In a different reality I could have bought a NSX. But the reality ended up with me favoring German sports cars.

But lately I have been considering a Civic SI with a 6-speed manual for my daily driver.

As for Nissan...

My first car was a Datsun 510. When the 240Z showed up I liked the 240Z. (In homage to this car I put Z pistons -- which provided higher compression -- in my 510 engine I built.)

But subsequent Z's got bloated...

The Skyline/GTR just never showed up on my car radar.

The merger I read was initially "suggested" by some Japanese government bureaucracy. So its not like Honda and Nissan had this brainstorm a merger would be a good thing. Word is Honda not too keen on this merger. Nissan I suspect sees a hopefully less bleak future arising from the merger.

The supply network for Honda (eAxle - supplied by Hitachi Astemo Ltd mainly) and Nissan (supplied by Jatco mainly) looks like it will be affected the most since the partnership has already started for the EV space..

Seems the outlook doesn't look good for many suppliers who are going to be cut off because 'standardization' is going to bring in 'efficiency'..

Agree with you on the sheet metal and interior design part..

The Nissan Leaf was one of the worst EVs on the market, and actually soured a lot of people on EV adoption. If that is Honda's catch-up plan, they are doomed.

Should this thread be in a "topic" section of this site?????

wait for $5 fuel and then revisit this thread.

Honda was the MPG company for a long time. Reliable. Affordable. Somewhere they lost that section of the business and ruined their reputation. Is actually true for most all companies. You don't have to compete yourself into failure if you make a good product already.

I believe that Honda stayed mostly the same and nearly everyone else simply narrowed the gap. Also, why I take quality ratings now with a grain of salt. The scale has become compressed.

My experience with Hondas was that when they were small basic cars they held their own. I owned two with no A/C, crank windows and manual transmissions. It is easy to be reliable in that format. Though they still rusted like crazy.

Later Hondas that I have owned had automatic transmission issues and A/C problems. Things that DIYers usually don't tackle. That tended to ruin their affordability IMO.

Meanwhile, I have read more recently that these two companies overlap is too encompassing to make the merger very useful.
