Didn't watch the video but they loved that 5N in their review. They GUSHED about it and then we're like "yeah but I wouldn't buy one because it's an electric and doesn't work for our lives". It was kinda weird honestly.

Imagine if Hyundai took the effort and power they did in the 5N and put it into an ICE car people wanted.

I test-drove regular Ioniq 5 recently; didn't dislike it, but wasn't blown away by it in any sense of the word.

5N is, supposedly, on another level. But at 4,861 lbs, it is hard to imagine it being nimble or doing anything other than shredding tires in the turns.

EVs are not for everyone, but they do open a LOT of new packaging and performance possibilities.
I didn't hear that negative comment from the duo of commentators, but frankly, their presentation format is not my cup of tea so I fast-FWDed through a lot of mumbling.

I think Hyundai will have zero problems selling all the 5N's it builds.
$66K for a fun 601 hp car that spanks ///M3 AWD (at least on the straights)?

We are living in the golden times for performance car enthusiasts!

I have the ev6 gt. Very fun in a huge car park or short track. Turns on a dime. But no sound lol. I won't say no soul but there's no sound. M3 ev should be fun but only if you have access to fast chargers. Otherwise I'm keeping my 550 for the foreseeable future.

I really like Throttle House but this pick is not great. It seems they are getting some $$$ from Hyundai as they also had Elantra as a mention.

They should have separate categories for EVs and ICE.

Also having CyberTruck as worst new car is not accurate and either politically motivated or to appeal to social media mob. The Acura ZDX for example is much worse than a CT which actually is selling well and brought out some new technology.

I disagree. Cars may be fast now, but they're also insanely expensive, complicated, and totally not engaging. That's $60k for a budget brand hatchback with "acceptable" materials and finishing.

It's easy to a argue this is the darkest of days for enthusiasts. There's a ton of commoditized fast crap, but few enthusiast cars left, if any.

The channel and presenters established themselves as hardcore enthusiasts, not general auto reviewers. Each of them own RWD manual cars.

So please spare me the excuse that they picked a heavy EV over a manual 911 S/T with RS motor! 👎

How is CyberTruck a failure when it outsells all the EVs combined that are not Teslas in the US 😂 Not to mention it brought many innovations to the auto industry. Again if it had a Ford/GM badge, media would be singing its praises.

They're Canadian, so they have to push the EV agenda somewhat or Trudeau will freeze their bank accounts and all that.

The Elantra N is basically the last affordable enthusiast car, and it's a practical sedan that ha space for a family, gets good mpg, has an insane warranty, packed with enough tech, looks good, offers a manual. It is, objectively the best enthusiast car on the market right now, and it's like $35k?

They picked Ionic N not Elantra.

So 2 dudes that drive hardcore manual cars chose an EV SUV as Car of the Year - definitely not by choice.

Funny EV story, tonight my commute was 30 minutes longer why. a Rivian died on pm ramp to expressway. The back up was crazy, no real experience with an EV but can't you get a snail mode to get it off the road?

Gotta make their employers happy. When your boss says "the investment bank that owns the media conglomerate that owns us says you have to push EVa or you're fired", you do it. That's what happened at Jalopnik, and C&D, and Donut, and it's gonna keep happening.

Also, they drove stuff like Miata and old Alfas. Not exactly "hardcore", they drove super lightweight low powered cars. Not like, Shelby Cobras or anything.

I heard that if they didn't pick an EV, YouTube was going to shadow ban their channel.

FUD.

If you manage to get an EV stopped in traffic because you run out of juice, you are an abject idiot. There are multiple warnings and, yes, turtle mode. They do not just suddenly die.

Either this car had another issue or the driver was a stone cold MORON.

They're the best car channel since Top gear.

By modern standards the Hyundai is not heavy, it's lighter than many performance ICE cars, which is staggering but true. They Cybertruck is an utter and complete joke, it solves zero purpose, carries fuck all, it's massive, build quality is terrible and littered with compromises. It's sold OK because of hype and the gimmick factor but was just reading today they are starting to pile up on lots, deliveries are lower than expected and discounts are starting. It won't last 5 years before it is canned.

And a 911 S/T, magnificent vehicle, incredible, also unobtanium and of you miraculously get your hands on one it'll set you back well over half a million bucks.

These two boofheads have repeatedly show a willingness to call out bad cars or call out bad aspects of cars so i may not agree with the 5N but given the parameters they set, i can see why they chose it.

I agree with you. There is hardly any diversity in model line up within a manufacturer and barely any diversification between auto manufacturers. GM and Ford share their 10-speed auto transmission. GM and Honda were going to model-share EV. BMW and Toyota platform share the Z4. Just for a few examples. When does Ford drop its V8 and just buy small blocks from GM?

EVERY manufacturer has a 2.0L turbo 4. If it wasn't for BMW and Porsche we'd have I-6 or Flat 6. Hopefully Mazada's inline 6 spreads to a sedan and Subaru keeps its Boxer-6. And can we have a non-///M RWD sedan from BMW? And screens, can someone consider a car without a laptop stuck to the dash panel?
