MT: 2025 BMW M2: The Performance Vehicle of the Year Remains a Stone-Cold Killer

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Via Motortrend:

Quote:
BMW gave its exceptional M2 a power bump for 2025. But does it make a big difference to measurable performance?

We’ve raved about the G87-generation BMW M2 from the first time we tested the eight-speed automatic model, and our platitudes continued through our subsequent test of the manual-equipped version. If that weren’t enough, we then named it our 2024 MotorTrend Performance Vehicle of the Year, a monster of a win that led to us now taking delivery of a 2025 BMW M2 as one of the newest members of our long-term test fleet...

That is a nice review and shows how well this car is engineered and executed from factory to driver. Every single time. My ownership and these consistent reviews and the fun yielded have easily kept me out of an M4 and others lately.

The M2 is a great drivers car. Period. Perfect? - no. No car is.

The cons are kinda stupid.
1. Optional carbon fiber seats are too stiff? Then don't waste 5 grand on them.
2. Manual shifter rubbery? what did you expect, its a BMW, at least a manual is still available.
3. Front-end looks unfinished? That's your opinion. I think it looks really good.

I think they are just trying to find SOMETHING to complain about for the article.

They could have mentioned weight and lack of physical buttons on the idrive 8.5 instead of the seats.

they have to find nits to pick that arent going to piss off BMW PR and marketing, because remember, "autojournalists" are like 95% bought and paid for by the OEMs. some PR teams even give them "safe targets" to pick on.

"we know the styling is out there, comment on it, its subjective. we are fine discouraging manual sales- you can say its rubbery, but only relatively. the CF seats being overly aggressive will appeal to some! but dont you DARE mention the buttons or weight. that may actually impact sales."

lol, these should be the cons
1. Parking Lot Anxiety – You park miles away from other cars, but somehow, a 2001 Corolla still parks right next to you.
2. People Assume You’re a Street Racer – Even if you're just commuting to work, every Honda Civic with a fart can will try to race you.
3. Police Radar Auto-Locks Onto You – Even if you’re not speeding, the M2 just looks guilty.
4. Your M2 Becomes Your Personality – At this point, your social media bio might as well just say "M2 Owner."
5. Grocery Bags No Longer Stay in One Place – Buy eggs? Say goodbye. Your trunk is now a blender.

Freaking love mine. Thankful I was able to get it in manual. Didn’t go CF buckets, maybe would have looking back on it though. Biggest cons I have are lack of physical buttons and analog gauges. Less spaceship on the inside would have been nice.

Cons continued (lol)

1. Cops Don’t Need a Reason Anymore – “License and registration.” “What did I do?” “You drive an M2, son.”
2. Other BMW Drivers Will Give You ‘The Nod’ – You are now part of a secret society of questionable driving habits.
3. Your Wallet No Longer Exists – Not empty. Just ceased to be. Vanished. Entered the shadow realm.

This is factual.

Why do so many reviewers mention the increased horsepower and then act like it's real even though they can't get it to show up in testing? Isn't the consensus that it's the same exact engine that was previously being advertised has having less horsepower than it actually did? Has anyone actually compared the 2024 and 2025 on a dyno?

because it was on the BMW PR provided "hot fact sheet" to ensure that it's mentioned ten times in the article.

Cons are definitely iDrive & not coming with forged wheels like the other M cars. I don't really care about forged wheels along with probably 99% of buyers, but based on the persistent "oh no, cast wheels" comments here, it should be mentioned a a "con".

I'm currently in a loaner which does not have an iDrive controller... all touch. It's horrid. Like the worst thing I have ever witnessed in any loaner car. I hate it with a passion and whomever thought it was a good idea to lose the controller needs to be fired. The iDrive in the '25 M2 is heaven in comparison, but if BMW is leaning towards losing the iDrive controller in the future, I think that is a horrible horrible direction.

They need to follow Jeep's lead and bring the physical buttons back. Re: iDrive, there's just too much unnecessary tech in these cars. I don't use 98% of it, and if it needs constant updating, it probably shouldn't be in there, just my opinion. Amazing how I can hop in my 2011 sports car, and it works without all the software crap. How did I ever live without cameras, and apps, and huge screens...

Yep. Just because they CAN add tech complexity, doesn't mean they SHOULD.

The apex of interior ergonomic control design for BMW was the E30. Simple. Intuitive. Effective. No need to look for anything.

Downhill ever since.

It is real. Do some research instead of blabbing out this tired fake argument. People with pre-‘25 cars get flashed with the 2025 LCI tune all the time.

You’re about 6 months behind the curve.
