Why fake ///M badge?

Why do people put an ///M badge on their car even it there are ZERO ///M parts in it? If you buy some ///M parts from BMW performance they automatically rebadge your car, myth or fact? Why do people want others to think that they own an ///M? I thought that's not the point of bmw. I thought the whole point of bmw is to be discrete.

This is by far the most over-discussed topic on any BMW forum.

People want the best, even if they don't have it. BMW does not rebadge any car for any amount of 'M' parts purchased. And the point of an 'M' car is to be anything but discreet. Look at the original 'M', widebody fenders and all, and your own, giant bulge in the hood...

I saw an M Badge on a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Eclipse also had APC stickers everywhere (a big one on the hood), replaced the Mitsubishi emblems with APC chrome emblems, chrome wheels that were too big for the car so the car looked "raised up" instead of lowered. I'm sure the car was full of Wal-Mart parts...should've taken a picture...if I see it again, I will.

In the mean time...here's some pics of other cars to hold you over:

Still feel bad about having other people put the M Badge on their non-M car? What about MR2's that slap on Ferrari kits?

Our company's attorney had a 318ti with an ///M badge.

That was classy.

I hope the members defending VW's with mercedes rims in that other thread have full respect for these cars because it's practically the same thing.

reminds me of few days ago when i was driving up from dc and i saw a suburban with an escalade badge and GIANT cadillac decal on its rear window. at first i told myself "no way that's an escalade". if you recall, escalades have red led's running across the top, this guy had a bootleg set of led's going across the bottom where the rear hatch opens. so i zoom up to see the front side of his car, and sure enough he even had a fake escalade grill/badge combo on the front.

Sure it is. The VW defenders clearly said they put those rims on their cars because they think it looks good and we should respect their opinions. The "ricers" are putting crap on their cars for the same reason. They think it looks good too. Why should we have to respect one group and not another? Looks are completely subjective.

No, rebadging is different. VW heads don't put Merc wheels and act like they drive a Merc. Also, VW owners aren't ricers by any means, they are intense at DIY stuff and aren't tools. Why respect VW people? Because they know what they are doing, they don't put R32 badges on their Jetta and expect people to believe them. Ricers put random shit on their car in the hopes of fooling people that they have what they really don't. Yes, it is easy to look at ricers and the VW scene and think that they are the same. In reality, people tend to judge the VW crowd based on what they think they are. I understand their scene, their pursuit to be unique. Ricer's can't be respected because they put Type R badges on every panel. VW owners should be respected because more often than not, they know their car at an intimate level. Go through a ricer forum, then a VW forum and tell me that you respect ricers more.

This is much more prevalent in the Mercedes ranks. Those AMG packages are so identical to the real offerings from Affalterbach that even car bores would struggle to tell them apart.

true, but here is the part where I personally get confused, if a person looking at the car, recognizes that it has an M badge and knows what it STANDS for, wouldn't they most likely ALSO know the difference between a true M car and some poser ?? if true, WHY DO IT AT ALL if your not fooling anyone ??

I'm not speaking about badges specifically. I'm talking about the look in general. And I'm not saying I respect one more than the other. In my opinion, I think the results both look equally dumb. It doesn't matter if one group "knows what they are doing" or not. I'm sure there are those that look at my 135i and think I ruined a perfectly good car. Just like me, they have a right to their own opinion as well. Being unique is great and all, but doing something that looks stupid for the sake of being unique? Not my cup of tea. And as looks are subjective, I think I have the right to determine what I think looks good or not on a car.

Big wings, stickers, and neon lights on a japanese car is no worse than slammed over-sized mercedes wheels on a VW. I respect both side's decisions to do what they want with their car equally. But I also think both styles look like crap.
