C63 Owners, Please Chime in!

A good friend of mine is contesting buying a C63 AMG. He wanted to know some pro's and con's.

Some questions he had:

1. Does the C63 need all that power it has?

2. How does it stack up against an M3?

3. How is the gas mileage?

4. Will it make me pump gas 4 times a week?

5. How far does it rev?

6. How is the suspension for daily driving?

7. If anyone has gotten to take theirs out into the snow, how did it hold up? He will have snow tires.

8. How does it handle in general? How does it handle compared to an M3?

9. Interior quality, what is it like?

10. Does it have a lot of buttons?

He won't listen to me because he says my family has owned many BMW's, so I will favor the BMW. I think of myself as an auto enthusiast so brand doesn't matter to me. T

I will relay this info on. Help is greatly appreciated!

Buddy of mine has one...plus check out the consumer's reports on it...not the cheapest thing to maintain, and it goes wrong quick.

Other than that, it has decent room, looks nice, has that luxury MB feel...interior is great! Just pricey to maintain.

Driven it, can't really say much since I havent driven the M3. Lets just say all he needs is a local test drive, and half of what you're asking will be answered within a few minutes of that test drive.

Gas mileage sucks already you should know 6.3 V8.. if you're even considering a performance car like this you shouldn't worry about the gas mileage.. worry about the maintenance.. i.e brake pads, oil changes, which are going to be expensive (its a given).. but then again if you can even afford to get one, you definitely should be able to afford the maintenance, don't buy it and break your bank knowing you can't afford to operate it.

Interior.. i agree with the guy above me.. very nice, better than the E92/E90 in my opinion.

Wrong forum, you should try mbworld.org and ask the C63 owners. Maintenance no more no less than M3 or Audi RS, same with gas depends on how you drive.

Have one in the family. Driven it a couple thousand miles total after borrowing it for a couple of weeks. Hope this helps.

Yeah, it definitely has the right amount of power. It doesn't actually feel insanely fast, but the acceleration never stops. Traction control kills acceleration btw. At the very least it needs to be in Sport mode to allow some wheelslip.

2. How does it stack up against an M3?
Can't comment too much on this, seeing as I've only done two small test drives on M3s that haven't been broken in, but I can compare it to the 335i.
-Lighter, more precise steering
-Better brake feel; similar braking performance
-Faster, much more satisfying shifts, but input-to-execution is pretty delayed by modern AT/DCT standards. Also you can't stack shift commands
-Less balanced in corners. It has a tendency to shift weight unnaturally, like you can feel the contact patches going every which way when you're driving on the brink of their traction limit
-The exhaust is godlike at any revs and with any level of throttle
-Interior materials and design are boring, but a little more mature you could say. Very solidly built on the inside though; very few squeaks and rattles. Plus the seats are out of this world

3. How is the gas mileage?
In one word: terrible.
Unless you're driving like an absolute grandma, you'll be looking at sub-20mpg.

4. Will it make me pump gas 4 times a week?
That's hard to tell. Depends on how much you drive and how hard you drive. Drive 75 miles a day at an aggressive pace and you're looking at a good two, maybe three fills a week tbh. Drive it like a normal person and one to two is within reason.

5. How far does it rev?
7200rpm. It will hold redline in manual. It sounds amazing too, but if you hit the fuel cutoff while going WOT in a straightline it's like tossing an anchor out the back. There isn't a smooth rev-limiter like all BMWs have.

6. How is the suspension for daily driving?
Better than my E92's without RFTs, so definitely tolerable. It's not cushy by any means, but I've never complained.

7. If anyone has gotten to take theirs out into the snow, how did it hold up? He will have snow tires.
C63 in snow = lol. Can't comment though.

8. How does it handle in general? How does it handle compared to an M3?
As explained earlier, it has a less neutral cornering behavior than my 335i. I'm less confident to throw it into a bend w/o traction control engaged. It has a tendency to understeer a bit, and I've been cautious about the tail. The steering doesn't load up completely consistently either. Resistance is pretty linear despite the level of grip available up front. The steering is very precise though, and ultimately very fun in the end. Nothing to complain about at all for a DD.

9. Interior quality, what is it like?
We have all black. It's okay. The main dash materials are disappointing, but the leather feels great, and so do the buttons and aluminum trim. It's solidly constructed, and storage space is decent for a sedan. The iPod interface is terrible. You have to use the screen within the speedo to select tracks, which you navigate by using the steering wheel buttons. Can't select lists, artists, albums, etc. Biggest interior fault imo.

10. Does it have a lot of buttons?
It's completely idiot proof. The COMAND system is more intuitive than 1st-gen iDrives, but it doesn't offer the level of options in either gen iDrive. There are buttons for the things that need them. No excess confusing shit here. They all have a satisfying click as well.

He won't listen to me because he says my family has owned many BMW's, so I will favor the BMW. I think of myself as an auto enthusiast so brand doesn't matter to me. T

I will relay this info on. Help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much! That's exactly what I was looking for! Are you looking at a C63 Nikkah for your next car?

He now asks, "Overall Nikkah, would YOU purchase one over an M3?"

It's not expensive to maintain. Don't know where the hell people are getting these conclusions from. You'll go through tires faster relative to our cars, like you could look at a new rear set every ~12k miles, but that's the only drawback in comparison, besides the lack of free oil services and such.

Nah, if anything I'll be looking to save cash and go for a MkVI GTi or a loaded 5.0. I'd pass on the C63 simply because I have way too many tickets as it is. I'm pretty susceptible to speeding...last thing I need is 450bhp under my right foot haha. An S4 might be the next, next car I'll be looking at.

The heavier the car, the more power it needs. :dunno: I think that's what he meant.

He likes clean dashes. Doesn't like too many buttons cluttering the center stack.

The m3 and c63 are not really the same thing(well used to be before the bloated e9x me) Btw the m3 is more of a track tool toy then the c63. The c63 is a better DD no contest. However the m3 has something special, handles better etc

They're not all that different imo if we're talking about potential DDs. They're both equal amounts of fun to drive, they just go about their business in a slightly different way. Comparing an E90 M3 to a C63 comes down to small preferences.

I prefer the M3 simply because of the aftermarket support and BMW culture. The things that would tie me over to the C63 would be the engine/exhaust and the seats, plus the fact that it's not the popular choice.

Practicality, they're a toss-up. They both get below-average fuel economy (and it's really how you drive that determines your overall MPG). They're both practical cars. They both aren't the comfiest things in the world. They're 300lbs and 50bhp/140lb-ft apart. The M3's DCT is better. The C63's seats are better.

I'd still go for the M3 and do some tasteful mods instead.
