I would go with the iPad. The Playbook really only works if you have a Blackberry phone to begin with. It doesnt have a lot of its own services like BBM, it utilizes the BBM in your phone and basically just gives you a bigger screen for it.
Another option for you is Android. Samsung just released their Galaxy Pad 10.1, and a lot of reviews say its the first really competitor to the iPad 2. |

Native email and calendar are coming, in which case you won't need to use the BB Bridge (requiring a BB).
The Playbook is still in early adopter phase. If that's not what you're looking for, then stay away from it. Apps are sparse and plenty of bugs are still around, although it's made leaps and bounds since release. |

The Apple store is another Apple creation of something they've made people think they "need". I can't stand the place, but it has been necessary in the past when I've had iPhone batteries crap out on me. |

I have a blackberry, and an iPad 1. Apple hardware isnt the most advanced, its almost like they are purposely holding back on technology, because there are a lot of tablets out there that are faster and more powerful, but what makes the Apple devices work are the apps. The apps are just good.

Hence, I only "needed" it because they designed it that way. |

Shitty. I had to wait a bunch because people were still lined up for the 3GS release (it was still less than a week old I think) and they treated me like I knew nothing about technical issues or the phone itself. It was much like walking into a dealership knowing everything about the car you want (tech and spec-wise) and having the salesman try to feed you all kinds of "look how smart I am" bullshit. I was there for what should have been an in-and-out servicing and it took a couple hours. Complete BS. I should have been able to walk in there and say "the battery is defective and I need a new one or new phone" and been out of there in a few minutes.
It would have been awesome to be able to bypass that shit with a device that allowed for the most basic of self-servicing, a battery change. |

I usually just walk in, check in and go straight to the "help" part of the store. |

I think it really depends what you intend on doing with it. if your use is gonna be media consumption, then i would agree with the ipad. if you are looking for a little more useable device (USB Ports for example) but still mainly a media consumption device, then an android based tablet is probably a better bet. I do all kind of stuff including media consumption, remote desktop into my server upstairs for downloading, i enjoy drawing, and like a camera for the occasional Skype. I sometimes would like to take it to work and take meeting notes. all of that requires a little more horsepower than an ipad or android based tablet can do, so i bought a PC tablet running win7. it really depends on what you need or want to do.
