I watched this video this morning, I know the 458 is the benchmark right now, so I was disappointed hearing the McLaren fell short. First thing I noticed was that they tested the cars on the Top Gear test track, so I was curious to see what route they took when they said the McLaren was a tenth of a second off the 458's lap time. Did they go the typical Top Gear track route to test that? Or did they make up their own?
I love the McLaren, but to me it doesnt matter if it fell just short of the 458 or not, I will never be able to afford either of the cars. And although I praise the 458 for its incredible performance, I still think the front of that car looks ugly. From the side it looks great, the back is ok, but the front is ugly. Still an incredible car as well. But if I could afford them, I would still pick the McLaren. |

WOW! I wonder how long it's going to take McLaren to disable the traction control completely? This is the second test I've seen that they complained they couldn't turn off the traction control on the Mac.
I've seen the 458 in person, up close. I like it a lot! I can't wait for the McLaren dealership to be completed just 7 miles from my house though.

My take on this is, in the hands of the averge joe the MP12C will probably be faster, however in the hands of a professional racing driver (not the target market) the Ferrari is going to take it.

^And some criticize BMW for having "too much models",... at least they are more different.... back to topic.
The 458 is an amazing car, I saw the video before reading any of the posts and was a bit worried that the McL would beat the Ferrari since as they said "on paper" it should perform better,... but just as my heart felt,... the Ferrari is still king and will always be. There will be more powerful cars, more aggressive cars, perhaps with more grip or handling, better 1/4 mile times and stuff, even some better lap times, but the feeling and the precision will never be matched,.... I'm unsure I will be able to buy one ever, but if I ever have enough money to buy a super car,... it will be a Ferrari for sure.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Top gear's test track being used for this show as I'm pretty sure fifth gear have their own track to test cars. I tried searching for it but couldn't find anything as to why this happened. Hmmm, so I thought the MP4 would be dethrone F458 but I guess I was wrong. I guess the word ''experience'' really counts as Ferrari have been in this business of sports cars for years. And I have to disagree on some of the points you mentioned about F458. I don't think the Ferrari looks ugly from the front, its the total opposite and looks beautiful. I guess the only place it looks a little different is from the sideview. The wheels are massive but look small for F458. And also, if I had the money and had to choose between the two, it would be the Ferrari. Its just due to the fact I have never owned one and it would be a dream come true to own something so rare, exotic, exhilarating exhaust note and beautiful. Unfortunately, Mclaren doesn't stir up that feeling for me as they are new in the business and need time to reach what Ferrari is today.

exactly the review i was looking for (if i was in the market ). i want a car that does exactly what they want - put a smile on my face. the 458 most definitely does that while parked and it looks to do an even better job when you're behind the wheel

I really like the looks and the technology of the McLaren but am disapointed it failed be better, being much faster. However, I like McLaren's return, can't wait for the next ones, Lotus Esprit and De Tomaso Panthera and also at last BMW M. In a few years the fight will be EPIC. Will the 458 Italia, the first one to come out still hold it against the yong ones?

I'm a little disappointed... The McLaren hype was so short-lived
But... I guess the King is still the King.
