he should have taken the stack of 100s and never returned. everyone would have been better off. I could understand giving him 6 months, but what the fuck 15 years? not cool.

Saw this on same link as story, makes about as much sense.
Florida activists arrested while attempting to feed the homeless Orlando - At least twenty-one 'Food Not Bombs' volunteers have been arrested in a Florida park for feeding the homeless and other needy people who are struggling to survive in an economy that doesn't show any signs of improvement. In defiance of a public ordinance that bans 'large group feedings,' defined as gatherings that attract and feed more then 25 people, volunteers with "Foods Not Bombs" are being arrested in Orlando, and there are appears to be no compromise in sight which will satisfy both city officials and event organizers. The group's name and mantra "Food Not Bombs" may sound innocent enough, but not to city of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, who has referred to the volunteers as 'food terrorists.' Dyer said organizers knowingly violate the law by providing free vegan and vegetarian meals to the hungry, within the city limits of Orlando. The organization operates in 1,000 cities, in over 60 countries feeding starving people. http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/308671

^^^^ are you bloody kidding me?
and as for the OP, 15 years is way too much. I wouldnt condone stealing even if he's hungry, but 15 years is absolutely ridiculous. He even gave back some of the money, and then surrendered himself ??? Like Kiemyster said, 6 months tops

This was really sad, the guy did the right thing, he turned in the money and fessed up.
He knew robbing the bank was bad, but he only took what he felt he needed. |

There's a serious lack of equity in our criminal justice system.
Sentencing a man for 15 years in this situation is utterly ridiculous and reeks of waste, though I have to wonder if this is what the defendant wanted in the first place due to his desperation... in any case, white collar criminals do this all the time and get away with it, or they get light sentences. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, much like the similar sounding Bud Dwyer who killed himself, has no place making decisions over others. The term "Food terrorists" is not only unprofessional as it is pejorative, but it makes a mockery of our civil liberties and those who were victims of real terrorists. Who does this mayor think he is by labeling these folks as terrorists, and then even worse they're all arrested for setting up a food bank? Orlando might think that they won the PR game with this, but it's going to hit them in the face hard because the shaping message is already delivered, regardless of other facts. I would still like to see more facts about this story, especially the suggested alternate location. Yikes, big time... I still believe we're in the greatest country on earth, but stories like these really make me question the types of people who are voted into public office, then it leads me to believe that American voters are slowly becoming domesticated cows.

its always been like this. most of the people in jail are there because they like to get high. The legal system in the USA destroys more families and imposes more social costs to society than the amount of actual benefit we get out of it. Our legal system needs to be looked at, and cost to penalty ratios need to be applied.
unusual and cruel punishment is just a regular day in the eyes of the law. Deliver us from babylon, be strong.
