Love this camera. Canon did a very good job with it and I hope that this is the first of many to come of its kind.

I don't think it's a glorified dSLR, from what I've heard.

just heard the 5d markIII will not be announced FEB 7th.
hopefully they'll be great upgrades and similar features and output as the Canon EOS C300. Expensive? yes. The Canon EOS C300 market price for a pro video level camera --16,000$ believe it or not, hit the sweet spot. for what ur gett'n - it's priced well. if they bring another line below it (6-8K) - that will sell like hotcakes. Or they give alot of these features on the upcoming 5D MarkIII. I'll be a happy camper.

I hear u on camera specs / not a true 4k camera. It's not a RED EPIC or an ARRI Alexa, both priced about 57-60K without lens. Red one at 25K and ScarletX at 16K. Look at the Ikegami HDS-V10 , 25K. It fits into a workflow i'm familiar with for speedy turnarounds for broadcast. The mpeg codec marries audio and video nicely. Quick ingest to a non-linear, a familiar name brand with a long history in photography and cinema, great support. The look-wise of the EOS C300 output, no judder or moire, great handgrip - familiar canon settings, high ISO setting (20K). For what it delivers, it's well priced, imho. 8-10k would be the sweet spot. Red is just a different beast - different workflow. at some point, in the industry, you stumble upon a "workhorse" camera and I believe this EOS C300 will be one of them. Let's see if the technology from the EOS C300 trickles down.

nah...shoots 422 man so marginally better than a dslr. Boo on that. Not to mention all the proprietary cine-lenses you gotta buy and it's new log file format which will be hell for transcode and backend workflow. For the price it's better to get a scarlet at 10K (that's half the price) for true 4K 16 bit @ 400mbps and call it a day. I own an EPIC and shoot with a 5DmkII/7D /w good glass for pickups and it's more than adequate. I wouldn't waste your money on this. Watch Nero's newest video, coming out any day now... all shot on a Scarlet and a 7D. Looks the Bees Knees. Frankie, hit me up if you wanna borrow or mess with my EPIC...peace!

i definitely would say it's a hell of a lot more than marginally better than a dslr. have you ever graded 5D/7D footage?? and graded footage from the C300? HUGE difference.
and you do not have to use proprietary cine-lenses - there's a PL mount version and an EF mount version, and last i checked, there were tons of each type of lenses available. and the "log file format" you're referring to is just a gamma curve used in grading. it's just like the cinestyle lut for the 5D. the MXF files that it outputs have long been used by Avid and other editing software, which is easily transcoded for dailies. the workflow is the same as RED minus the extra steps tweaking the raw data and doing one-lights. hell, it's the same as dslr footage - you can even edit it natively in FCP. and the scarlet is not 10K - you can't do anything with just the brain. i'm not saying the C300 is as good as the Scarlet, but it's definitely got its advantages and disadvantages over it. and its footage is a hell of a lot better than current dslr's.

After using the C300 for 3 shoots as a canon test loan I must agree to disagree with you on the quality of the footage over a dslr as being that dramatic. skin tones are still very canon dslr;even using a neutral flat color style it still presents that ever so lovely orange and pinkish cast (subjective of course). Color correct schemes on it are very similar in scope with shooting on my 5D. Although I will say it handles noise much better at high iso than its dslr counterparts and moire/rolling shutter is greatly reduced (not eliminated) as well. And, yes, you'll need to pay roughly 15K on a scarlet, before lenses, to have a fully functional camera but you can't argue near lossless 440MB/s data vs. mpeg-2 compressed 50MB/s footage. It's simply more information to work with.
Anyhow, at the end of the day, it's what is being shot and if the image is compelling to the narrative despite the subtleties in the actual cameras used...that's all that matters. There's a lot of cameras out there to help you gain beautiful imagery. The C300 is a fine enough camera and the form factor is wonderful but I still think there are better options out there in the category. Just my 2 cents.

hey hey Chris! thanks for the offer on the EPIC use- I know u work with quality products. Oh the Scarlet... - it was meant to be one thing then changed to another thing and then ended up what it is now. lol. RED is a great cinema camera no doubt. i've heard the C300 is a 4k sensor, shot'n 422- matter of time for a hack or later software upgrade. from Canon Sensor Size: 24.6 x 13.8mm that's not bad at all. lot of head room for 422 output. like i stated 8-10k would be the sweet spot for the C300. Rodi thanks -

So you are still paying about 16k to get a good Scarlet setup. Most of the RED accessories are pretty shit imo, so be prepared to be re purchasing new accessories for your camera. Oh and dont forget, its still a RED camera. Be prepared to encounter some bugs when using the camera. RED has come a long ways from the RED one but its still a fairly new company. Ill be fair in saying that RED cameras do produce some stunning image quality but ive had way too many problems using red cameras. If i had the money, I definitely would try out the C300 and see if its for me.

oh man! how's life? long time no see. How's film school been? U know, Chris is technically correct with the RED. It's pristine in quality. I understand where he's coming from and i don't argue. He deals with alot of short format pieces. The man is on point. i agree, i hate using RED in post - but it has gotten better. If ur production has time budget'd for RED I say go for it, but if u have a quick turnaround may consider something else. I do like what Canon is doing and support them. It's not about finding the ultimate camera to own but more so finding a camera that works for your needs.

Probably won't get to USE it. Would you let your friend use it if you just got the cool new camera? Maybe after awhile, but not right away!
