Lightbulb BMW Toyota Joint Sports Cars Likely to be Hybrid

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Toyota Joint Sports Cars Likely to be Hybrid
34
COMMENTS

Remember the announcement made in July by BMW and Toyota regarding their plans to work together on the joint development of architecture and components for a future sports car? Few details were given about the end products for each respective company other than that the jointly developed sports car will not be identical nor share exterior designs and that they will be sustainable sports cars with environmentally friendly technology.

We expected the cars to feature technologies in which BMW and Toyota are market leaders -- carbon fiber and hybrid tech, respectively.

Toyota's UK chief Jon Williams has now indicated to Autoblog at the 2012 Paris auto show that the sports car is likely to be a hybrid. "In terms of the next developments we have announced a partnership with BMW to develop a sports car and that is likely to be a hybrid," said Williams.

"Our dealers want exciting cars that bring in new buyers. You'll have seen with our product plans that, in the words of our president, we are rewarding customers with a smile. That is all about driving and the thrill of driving. That has come back with the GT86 and will continue."

Could this provide the basis for the return of the Toyota Supra, in hybrid form? Time will tell, but what we do now know is to expect a hybrid sports car for BMW from this project.

They're missing the point I believe. Fun to drive and heavy batteries do not go particularly well together. Prove me wrong I guess, but ask Honda and their CR-Z how those sales are working out...

The infamous Supra Hybrid... The answer is yes the supra will be a hybrid but not with BMW... The joint project car will be more like a 6 series according to AutoGuide and TopGear...

"Toyota's GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II was hypothosized to be the next Supra but it is mid-engined and a hybrid. The new car will likely be the BMW 6 Series-based sports car that Toyota is developing with the German automaker."

Tesla roadster and new Model S seem to get plenty of fun to drivepraise despite their heavy batteries.

Opportunity missed. Not surprising considering BMW's latest products and direction. BMW's customer base will be completely different in a few years time, having a smaller percentage of driving enthusiasts among them.

Major Fail on BMWs part. I will not support a partnership with Toyota, not because I'm a snob. I have other reasons.

It just pisses me off, that I don't have adequate income right now to dump my 335 and get a 3.6 L Cadillac ATS with magnetic ride suspension.

Oh well, it's good to have goals LOL

If this project comes to fruition, i hope they learn a lot from Porsche and their 918 Spyder. What i mean by that is i want no compromises...

Good. this means BMW is interested in toyota for their green tech - toyota which has lead the hybrid campaign, smart.

Otherwise if they were to make a typical sports car with Toyota they would be playing second fiddle to Subaru, no need.

On what basis? You don't even provide a reason why you'd jump ship, it's ridiculous. But feel free to dump your 335i (which has nothing to do with this project) and get yourself a Cadillac then.... because of a project that non of us know anything about.

BMW cars are already becoming less and less dynamic. Their partnership with Toyota will result in a gutless hybrid appliance.

I think the objective is to find the optimum battery capacity that makes a meaningful improvement in fuel efficiency without weighing so much that the vehicle runs like a loaded truck.

This has been done in race car kinetic energy recovery systems. Until now, hybrid drive batteries have very high capacities to squeeze the last drop of fuel efficiency out. It is time to approach the problem differently.

As I noted the last time this was posted with that picture, the picture uses a re-badged Subaru car, thats not a Toyota... It kinda suggests a Subaru-BMW joint car for those people who are in the know...

BMWi is beyond developed, and is very much ready for production.

This is clearly something entirely different.

Yes the BRZ, FRS and GT86 all use the same Subaru boxer engine with the Toyota Body... Overall it is a Toyota investment project...
