Anyway to integrate it? Meaning yelp etc automatically open google maps over apple maps

You have to wait for Dev's to update Yelp & other apps to open using google maps.

But would they even do it...? I always thought by default, the iOS installed map app took precedence?

Correct, have to jailbreak typically to get rid of those kinds of things.

Read More about it here. Dev's can use google maps sdk to forward to Google maps app. Its up to devs tho.
