Suggestions for a new family car

Our current family car is a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It has served us well but at 106K I think it may be time to trade it in for something new. I have looked at the new Highlanders and was not very impressed.

The requirements are something that seats a minimum of seven people and gets decent gas mileage. It also needs to be four wheel or all wheel drive. No minivans.

The GMC Acadia/Chevy Traverse looks interesting. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The GM crossovers are nice but have been on the market awhile. The new Nissan Pathfinder seems to get good reviews. If you like German cars, you might want to wait for the new VW Passat based crossover that is coming out. If it has the 2.0 TDI it could be pretty sweet.

I didn't realize VW was working on a larger SUV. It looks like it won't be out for another year and is six passenger. The performance and mileage from the hybrid TDI engine sounds like it will be awesome.

I will definitely check out the new Pathfinder. The price looks about right.

The GM crossovers got a refresh for 2013 and are still regarded as one of the best crossovers in its class.

I love the Acadia's refresh. Would go for the Acadia over the Traverse.

Though if you have the money, I would step up to the Buick Enclave.

I'm in the same boat. Waiting for the new MDX tho. I like the clean 2 LCD center console and interior, tho exterior design is nothing to write home about.

I was also looking at the Yukon Denali Hybrid. Price seems a bit high but gonna see what kind of offer they have. Do you have one?

Ah I didn't read close enough i see. I would put my vote towards anything NOT general motors. My family's owned GM since the 80's, and in the mid-late 90's GM went to shit. Our current GM is an 04 avalanche, tranny went out at 130k(highway mostly), waterpump not short after, and then millions of little shits and giggles as well. While it's been a solid overall car, they cheaped out on too many things. I'll never buy a government motors car in my lifetime.

What's wrong with the Highlander at 106K? You could probably run it to 200K+ easily. Is it giving you problems?

No I don't have one but have been in them and really like them. Look great, very comfortable, and pretty good gas mileage especially for the city considering the size. I would go take one out and see what you think.

The Tahoe/Yukon Hybrids will be discontinued for the 2014 MY and won't be coming back when they are redesigned next year. Not sure when production will end for the 2013 MY for the full size SUV's.

Complaining that the transmission went out at 130,000 miles? That's not bad. My brothers E46 330xi has had a lot more go wrong and it is at around the same mileage when the transmission blew.... Parts wear out at around there. If the transmission was the biggest failure, I wouldn't complain too much. The smaller failures can be annoying though.....

My family has owned 4 GM's( with a 5th on order right now and 6 when my dad trades in the 335xi for the ATS). All have been solid. '96 Suburban, '02 Suburban, '06 Equinox( being traded in for a '13 Equinox that should be in June), and my '07 Saturn Aura. No major problems. Had a bad rear driveshaft replaced under warranty on the 'Nox, but no other issues with it. My Aura had a few minor first model year glitches, but solid as well. We have had nothing, but good experiences with GM.

Go test drive a Mazda CX-9. We've put 110k on my wife's (loaded AWD Grand Touring) in 4.5 years - great kid/trip car.

Actually decent to drive, unlike many cars in the segment. Just put another 650 miles on it this past weekend.

Im in the same boat. My choices are:
1) Infiniti JX35, expensive and underpowered, not fun to drive due to the CVT tranny
2) 2014 Acura MDX, its gonna be expensive and gotta full msrp as soon as it comes out
3) Nissan Pathfinder ,underpowered cheaper version of the JX

Man tough critic here. A tranny at 130k and a water pump after that and you'd never buy another GM again? I thought I had high standards .

I come from a diesel jeep that needed zero maintenance except fluids and filters for 175k miles

That thing is still running strong in the family. Cars are large investments, a 50,000 dollar truck should have no issues going past 100k miles, especially when its meticulously maintained and never beaten or abused in any way shape or form.

To clarify, i refuse to buy GM because of the bail outs. I won't support any company that needs hand outs to keep them afloat.
