Insurance rates raise when cops run plates?

I was once told that each time a cop runs your license plate, it could impact your insurance rates. Is that true?

I have a custom plate that got me pulled over once because the cop thought it was a fake novelty plate. But its a real plate registered to the state. Ever since then I notice when a cop is behind me they seem to be on the computer a lot probably running my plates. Had one behind me today at a stop light and I was certain he was running my plates because he followed me for almost a mile

No. I have been pulled over 20+ times. Insurance has never gone up.

I don't know about that but I have found out that if you apply for credit and your score gets checked too much, your credit rating drops.

Not sure that is true, unless the police database is directly linked to the DMV database which they generally are not. The police get a copy of the DVM database and they keep their own database on drivers. I have heard where the police know exactly how many times you been stop and for what reason and they know if your plate has been run before.

There is no way for the insurance companies today to know if your plate was run. Insurance companies in most states have to pay the state money to get access to your DVM records which should have any conviction on a ticket listed or any other DVM violations. I personally have not heard where the police are actually reporting to the state how many times they did a check on your driving record in their database.

If this was in fact true then my son's insurance would be through the roof. He tells me his GT Mustang is always getting it plate run, every time he is hanging with his friends at a parking lot. The police roll by and you can see them running the plate looking for a reason to harass the kids. Lucky for him he has clear record.

You do know there are now cameras on police cars that can run up to 60 plates a minute???!!!

There are strict rules on who can run a plate, even officers get in trouble if they run them for no reason. So no, your insurance does not know unless they are breaking DoJ rules.

Thanks everyone! I was told there was a point system that adds up the number of times your plates been ran that can increase insurance but I'm glad to find out that is not true

Not unless you're charged with something and get insurance points for it. I've had my plates run a few times and my insurance hasn't gone up for that.

when a cop runs a plate only basic info shows up on screen and they don't need any reason. There is button they can hit for more in depth background info but they need a reason to hit that button. They are not allowed to by law to hit the red button without PC. They can and will be questioned about it and fired or suspended.

Completely false.

Only way your insurance will go up is if you get a ticket and plead guilty or are found guilty of that ticket.

Issued ticket and go to traffic school? No change in insurance
Issued ticket and "get off like OJ" in court? No change in insurance
Issued ticket and officer friendly doesn't show in court? Charges dismissed and no change in insurance.
