carmax experience?
I'm seriously considering to sell my 335i and buy a jeep wrangler. I've had jeep wrangler before I had my M3 and I loved it.. but only reason why I sold it was because gas mileage was terrible and shit was slow to death but now I don't commute long distance anymore.... have you gotten your car apprased there? if so can you guys post mileage and year and see how much you got offered? I can go to carmax right now but I have to take aftermarkets parts out so I'm trying to see how much I can get..
Thanks.

They lowball the shit out of you. They offered me 12k on a 2008 328i with 74k miles, only option was the premium package. They had two similar cars on the lot, one without the premium package but less miles for $21,000 and one with the premium package and more miles for $19,000. I figured they price mine in the middle at $20,000 plus add in markup of $4-5,000 plus some costs and I was figuring I'd be offered around $14-15,000.
The two cars they had on the lot were in a lot worse shape then mine too. So don't get your hopes up.

The experience that @Seminole had isn't going to be that different from what you will have. You would be better off trading in your car (which would get you about what CarMax is going to pay you outright) or selling it on your own.

Buying experience is great. I bought an M3 from Carmax and it was a good experience.
Selling - dont do it. Unless you're desperate to dump a car (like i was with a C32 AMG that wouldnt stop breaking). Only advantage of selling to Carmax (besides tax savings on trade) is that you dont have to worry about a buyer coming back after you if the car breaks down later. |

FWIW, I went to carmax with my 2010 X6 35i in January 2012 and they offered me exactly what a dealer offered for the car; this is in South Florida... seemed reasonable to me. It was less hassle to use the dealer at that point simply because I didn't have to worry about getting a ride from Carmax to the dealer.

I had to sell a friends 5 year old mini when she moved out of the country. We checked comps of what other people were asking for the same year, mileage, etc… Carmax gave her $500 less than what most other private sellers were asking for in the auto trader. I thought it worked great and she got more than i thought she would get for it.
On the other hand, i don't think they pay out as much for premium cars as they do for cars like a standard mini, carolla, camery, etc… This statement is X 1000 if it's modded. They will give you way less for your car if it's got a single modification on it.

If you put it back to stock, just take it in and see what they'll do. Doesn't cost you anything but about 30 min.

I always take my car to carmax before I sell or trade it in that way I have something to compare with. The actual process to get it appraised is pretty easy and quick. Just get it appraised then see if you can get more else where. The quote is good for like a week I believe.

No dealer is going to offer you decent money. If you are a repeat dealer customer you may do better but otherwise if you have the time make5 or 6k extra and sell it yourself. Autotrader has a decent program for 180.00 where they take all the calls for you and help with ad. Worked great for me, sold my Tahoe in 7 days. CarMax will lowball IMHO.

No point comparing private party sale to trade-in. You will always get less for trade-in. Carmax is the same as trade-in. So to compare apples to apples, it is important to compare Carmax to dealer offers, and nothing else.

I guess carmax can be hit or miss. I got quotes for both my old GTI and Lexus IS from them and thought both were very fair. Ended up selling them the GTI and used their offer on the Lexus to negotiate with another dealership.
It's def worth taking your car to get a quote. It's free so why not. |

I ended up getting $2k more for my car on a trade in to the dealer compared to Carmax, and that was the dealer's first offer.

Me? I ended up with a Mazda CX-5. Wanted an SUV that got good mileage and had low maintenance costs.

I sold my previous car to them. The process was SUPER easy. I waited half an hour while the drove/evaluated the car, then they gave me an offer. To me, the extra grand or two I could have received selling private was not worth the hassle/time.

I sold them my 2008 Acura MDX and got full market value and they also gave me an additional $2000 cause I gave them the new stock wheels that I had in the garage because I had on aftermarket wheels when it was appraised.
Referred a few friends to them afterwards and they got lowballed by 4-5k on thier car. |
